Title: Philly Show Roll Call
Post by: Hipton on March 16, 2017, 06:48:35 PM
I would like to start a list of who will be attending the upcoming show.  I will be attending the show, but the dinner is full. Roxanne has put me on a waiting list. I would like to know who is not going to the dinner, maybe we can have our own dinner group. It will be great to see everyone again. We need to cherish these moments when we can see each other, you never know when it may all come to an end.  This has been a difficult week for me and I'm barely functioning. Right now, I am grateful for my hours being cut and only had to work two days this week.  Jay Lynch passed away, his buddy Skip Williamson passed earlier today and a dear friend who was very popular in the CA pinball community died from cancer a few days ago.  If you are a FB friend, I posted about him on my page.

I will be attending both the show and dinner on Saturday.  I'm rather excited, for this will be my first time ever.

I would suggest you create another post with three lists:  Saturday Show, Dinner, and Sunday Show.  As people reply, you can then go back into the same post using the "modify" feature and add their names to the appropriate lists.  This way people's responses will all be together in one central place and not scattered all over the thread.

Dinner and show for me, and I'll be setting up at a table as well.  Will be selling Wackies by the pound, especially Chrome. Get 'em real cheap.

Congrats Shoe.  That is quite a milestone.  Who knows, maybe I will finally make it back to a show this year.  I think it has been about a decade since I made a show.  I know I haven't been to the new place.  The last time I went was in Allentown.  I was there for the big one and the after party at Greg's.  That was the first time I met Jay and got to watch him draw in person.  I was blown away.  He was amazing, even moreso for me since I have absolutely zero artistic ability and watching someone create amazing drawings from just a pencil and a piece of paper was pretty cool.

I haven't been out that way since '05 and the big bash. No better excuse than the big FIVE-OH for Wackys.

Bill, Allentown is the "new" place. The big event (at Greg's with Jay) was in '05 and the Philly show itself was still in Mt. Laurel that year. Guess that just shows you need to join us more often, LOL.

I'll be attending the show (both days) as well as the dinner. Will have my usual Galactic Groceries set up, along with a preview of Wacky Packages paintings created from my rejected roughs from my Topps years (2005 - 2012) My table will be located across the aisle from where I've usually set up camp. Looking forward to reconnecting with long time Wacky friends & fans!

You'd have to ask Roxanne Toser is there are any more tables available.  If you have a table, your contract says that you have to attend both days.................so yes.

That's what I thought, that they don't like empty tables.  When I helped run the dealer's room at Icon, the dealers were supposed to be set up for the Friday evening opening, and stay through closing on Sunday evening.

If I was still living in NY I would have loved to have gone. I'm in South Florida now though.

My Funko obsession has run it's course after 15 years .. so now I'm back to some of my old collections.

Wacky's, other Non-Sport Cards, Baseball Cards, Pinbacks, and '66 Batman stuff.

I'm tired of the Mega Convention atmosphere .. no more SDCC or NYCC for me for a while at least.

Would love to find some old school shows to buy and even sell at.

Have fun all who go.

No, that wasn't me. The first Wacky trade(s) that I ever did in my 48 years of life, was last week with Sco(o)t and Andrew. Seriously. I've been on this site for almost 7 years and I just recently broke the 100 post mark, so I haven't been very active here.

Also, I don't know what Prodigy is/was. Wasn't that an internet service like AOL?

If anyone is interested in the dinner, contact Roxanne Toser and see if there's been any cancellations. I was on a waiting list and a spot opened up due to a cancellation. So, I'm quite happy to be attending the dinner and can't wait to see everyone. I'm staying at the Comfort Inn across from Dorney Park, coming in on Thursday. If anyone else is coming early and wants to hang out or go to dinner on Thursday or Friday night, let me know.

Yes.  If there's something a dealer has that you, arriving at 11, and someone else, arriving at 10, both want, the early bird gets the worm.

Sorry for the last-minute news folks, but due to a weather-related flight cancellation, I won't be able to get to the Allentown show this weekend. I can't express how disappointed I am! I'd been planning this for almost a year and  was really looking forward to finally getting to meet everyone! In any event, I'm sure it will be a great time for all and I hope you'll take lots of pictures. I want to see what I missed!

Next time I'm taking the train!

Neil

PS - As for the Pranky Products promo cards (and other goodies) I was planning to hand out, I've got a new plan and I'll post in a separate thread later this weekend.

I was incredibly bummed when I found this out. I kept looking around for you and finally found the table you'd have been at, with a hand-written sign on it explaining your absence. I dropped to my knees and wailed to the heavens. They had to inject me with medication to calm me down.

Yeah, crazy things tend to happen when traveling.  Take, for instance, Chad Scheres.  He manages to cross the country from Washington to Pennsylvania - what, 2000 - 3000 miles? - and then gets lost in Allentown!  (But, hey, I got lost a couple of times, too.)

You were there today in spirit today, though.  Everyone could vouch for that.

How was the dinner?  I wish I could have been there.

The show and dinner were both very cool!

It was a pleasure and honor to meet with and talk to so many of the forum members in person - Fanatical & Sickly, Dr. Deal, BigTomi, Pupsi-Cola, etc..  Both the WP and GPK camps were well represented.  This was the first time I've ever attended such a show, and it was marvelous to see so many people passionately united under the same banner.  For me, personally, it was also very nice to be able to connect the names to the faces, to be actually able to meet the real person(s) "behind the curtain."

It was also extremely rewarding to meet so many of the artists.  Everyone was kind, generous, friendly, conversational, and more than willing to share everything from stories and vignettes to explanations of their creative and artistic techniques.  It was so cool to have the opportunity to speak to Chad Scheres or Smokin' Joe in person, or to sit in the lobby of the Hilton chatting with George Wright.  (These things just don't happen everyday!)  I was also pleasantly surprised to discover that so many of the artists were also collectors themselves, and became WP/GPK illustrators simply because they, too, admired the same stickers that so many of us did while growing up.  (What a strange, yet wonderful, calling!)

At dinner, Jeff Zapata and others shared some of their memories of Jay Lynch.  The overall impression I got was of a madcap genius continually charged and bursting with creative electricity 24/7, an unassuming man who never quite lost that wondrous lens of perspective through which only a child views the world, a man who, throughout these many years, affected so many, many various people and brought us all together.

During dinner, the Tosers awarded many WP/GPK prizes to the guests.  At one point, Matt Stock won a JL memorial poster which he insisted upon receiving, even though he had the same posters for sale at his show table.  He then walked immediately and directly across the room and gave it to "Pupsi-Cola" (Mark) who I later observed holding the poster with what I can only describe as awe and perhaps even reverence.  I really believe the gesture made Mark's day.  Well done, Matt!

An artist also sat at each one of the tables, which for me was an unexpected surprise and bonus.  At end of the dinner, each respective artist then handed out a metal card which read (depending upon which table you were seated at,) "I had dinner at the Philly Show with Chad Scheres and got this cool metal card!  April 22, 2017."  Each guest also received a package of assorted WP/GPK cards, as well as a commemorative birthday card painted by George Wright.

A few crazy, disheveled guests did arrive to dinner a bit late (Chad Scheres and his gang, cough, cough.) It seems they became lost while traveling a few measly miles from Merchants Square Mall to the Hilton Garden, and subsequently led the Allentown police on a crazy, meandering, high speed chase through this quiet community.  By luck, they managed to spot the hotel and duck inside at the last moment, thereby eluding both the police and any charges that might have been pinned upon them.  (On a personal note, I don't know how they managed to get lost in the first place.  The hundreds upon hundreds of one way streets are all clearly marked, the major super highways only divide the city every other mile or so, the thousands of traffic lights all seemed to be in proper working order, and any major building landmarks (while not clearly identifiable by road signs) are all distinctly visible when one eventually arrives at them.)

A very memorable event with very nice people.  I'm glad to have met you all.

Postscript:  Some people were taking pictures, however I cannot really say when they might be posted.  As far as the Philly Show Promo sets go, they only allowed any one individual to buy two sets on Saturday.  That's it.  I don't know what will happen today.  I suppose it all depends upon how many sets are left before closing.  Somewhere on the forum, however, pictures of these 9 cards (3 WP, 6 GPK) have already been posted.

Addendum:  Smokin' Joe sold out of a couple of "Wacky-like" sets he has been working on, "Creepy Containers" and "Wicked Packages."  Both sets feature the high quality of artwork for which Joe is known.  "Wicked Packages," to say the least, is very "interesting."  Mind, it is not for the ages 8-10 group and is not bound by the moral propriety Topps sometimes tends to impose.  In my opinion, both sets are very unique and worth searching out.

I feel very fortunate to have been able to attend the dinner with my wife. I could not attend the show due family commitments and Pupsi was kind enough to get me one of the show sets. I sat next to Baked Bears and had a great time getting to know him and met some of the forum members who traveled to the event like Fanatical and Sickly. Sitting with the Artists Chad Scheres and John Gregory was a real honor and they could not have been more down to earth.   Jay's spirit was evident in the room throughout the evening. Stories about Jay were told,  tears were shed, laughs were had and 50 years of Wacky's and 32 years of GPK were celebrated.  The Tosers went above and beyond for this event and their attention to detail was everywhere. They had special Wacky/ GPK centerpieces on each table and at the end of the evening told us to look under our seats to determine who was the lucky person to take the centerpiece home. The Tosers gave each attendee a special metal version of the Jay Lynch Tribute Philly Show Promo card that was given out at the show.
They presented George Wright with a Large Metal version of the show exclusive card he painted for the dinner. The memories of that evening will last and the love in the room was strong.  Many thanks to the Tosers, Artists and Fans for making that special night happen in Jay's honor.

Andrew

Yeah,  for us who couldn't attend, are there pictures?

Here are pics of the Dinner Exclusives: Our table got the Chad Scheres card handed to us by Chad himself.

Thanks for posting the pictures, Collector.  It was nice to have met your acquaintance, and, yeah, it was cool talking to the artists, wasn't it?

I've noticed that you've added a few new posts.  Keep 'em coming, and welcome to the forum!

Well here it is 2 days after all the fun, emotions, etc. of my weekend at the show and to start things off, I want to start with a popular phrase that was used in the film Field of Dreams which I'm sure many of you know: "If you build it, people will come". Where I'm going with this is I placed some empty Wacky display boxes and many stacks of some of the newer Wacky singles on the table across from the table where you pay your Day 1 admission and wow did the people come up to that table and go to town on those boxes and cards, I obviously don't know who picked up a box(es) and the cards, But I'm sure they were all gone in less than an hr. As for the show itself, Like many shows I've attended in the past, I always attempt to try and recall the collectors who showed up for that particular show, Well this time, I'm not going to attempt it as I'm sure I'll miss some people. So I'll just say a big Thank you to all I hung out with at the show and then the dinner also. And speaking of the dinner, What a great meal!!!!! Chicken, Pasta, Dessert, and Beverages were definitely worth the price. During and after the meal there were lots of great conversations at each table with collectors who were meeting others for the very 1st time and ones that haven't seen one another in couple or so yrs. Prizes were handed out and I'm so glad that both Cheryl (Hipton) and I were able to acquire the memorial poster of Jay Lynch. She got hers through having our table no. drawn and I got mine directly from Matt Stock, As many of you that were at the dinner noticed that Mrs. Shoe and I got very emotional. WE didn't want any part of the weekend to end, But unfortunately all good things have to come to an end at some point. As far as things picked up at the show, I got some sealed ans boxes (Which I'm still in need of 2 certain ser. if any one can help) a few original singles for a forum member that couldn't be there, and 4 of Roxanne's sets. So I'll close here and just say that I'm already anticipating the fall show which BTW is Oct 21st/22nd

His name is Marty Krim. He is a long time non-sport collector and dealer. Not involved in the wacky hobby, more of a non-sport generalist.

it's already been 4 quick days since the show...

after 12 years since my last attendance, I finally headed to Allentown to check out a Philly Show again.
way too long in between shows, and something I need to work on

I didn't really expect to find too much in the way of cards, but I did complete my cereal billboard set for the 50th, picked up a couple nice sketches and a wacky shirt at Matt & Greg's table.
The big surprise was finding the very last X-fractor I needed to complete that Chrome set at Marc Simon's table. I figured this set would remain incomplete until the end of time, but there it was, a Jolly Mean X-fractor just waiting to be grabbed!

The real highlights though were in meeting all the artists and the forum members that were there.
From Smokin' Joe with his Wacky paintings and his personal sets, both the old 'wacky' ones and the new Creepy Containers, to George Wright and his Galactic Grocery cards and his Lost Wackys he had on view, to Fred Wheaton and his portfolio of Wacky and GPK art (that Hello Kidney piece is a thing of beauty to behold!), to Joe Simko, Jeff Zapata, Chad Scheres and Layton DeJarnette. Just fantastic to see all the original art and talk with the people who create these masterpieces!
And seeing more forum members than I can remember, old and new, Dave, Tom, Cheryl, Joe, Mark, Greg, John, Kevin, Rob, Dennis, Richard, Andrew, Marc - the latter group who are all part of the Buyer's Club as well, and awesome to finally meet in person.

Plus a huge and special shout out of thanks to my Wacky Uber drivers: Rob Hall and Joe Leonard, who got me back and forth from the hotel and show on Saturday and Sunday. And especially Joe, who went above and beyond on Sunday to make sure I checked out of the Garden Inn on time - after I stupidly forgot to before heading to the show that morning.

The other highlights of course were the great dinner and tribute to Jay on Saturday, the post-dinner hang-out at the Red Robin and the Sunday morning card talk session.

Great time all around and looking forward to doing it again some time!

Wow, that's a name form the past.  I traded with Marty many years ago.  From what I remember he is a little reclusive, but he has a lot of rare unopened packs.  I got some series 16 unopened packs from him and I think a series 2 as well.  It was a long time ago, my memory is a bit fuzzy there.
