Dave, thanks so much for posting this especially since 'Comrade Crunch', that's my gag!Good one Joe!!
Good one Joe!!
Kinda disappointed to be honest. I thought it was gonna be cool reprints, just another trending series.
Ugh. So they are continuing to dilute and alter the brand like they are with gpk's by including more and more non-product spoofs for celebrities and politicians.
Don't care for this trend at all. Not why I buy these cards.
Ahhh! So that's what I couldn't find a picture of the real product used for Trump Blocks - completely made up!Yep. Beyoncé, Trump, Hello Kitty. All fakes to get pop culture into the set. Like the mlb wackys did with baseball. Does nothing for me.
Chad, thanks so much! Hoping to see some of your awesome sketches in this set!

Just in time for Halloween. A sneak peek at a Donald Trump Wacky!

I'm a kid and do not enjoy the celebrity and current events cards.
I think this set will be very enjoyable and more appealing than the MLB set was.Limbo, anyone? :P
Does anyone know if the Old School subset are new gags, or are they more "best of" cards like the "best of '00s" subset?
Well I suspect your sensibility is unique for your age. How many if your friends collect Wackys? I think Topps hopes to expand the appeal to bring more kids into collecting them.
I am curious to hear what others think of them going with a much thinner black outline around these new wackies? To me there just arn't wackies if they lack the traditional thicker black border/ outline. I am hoping that most of the cards will have the regular border and only a few will have the thin border shown on some of the samples. On the other hand, the thin border allows the art to be printed larger, making some of the tiny type easier to read.

There's been some thin borders before, on cards without a die cut. So maybe some of these won't be. cut either?
OK, I'm gonna give my take on this although I know it will be in the minority. Remember like Trix, Wackys are for kids (8-10 years old). In fact when I write gags, the family gets together and we brainstorm ideas. From this I learn a ton about current culture and the things kids today are interested in. If Wackys did the same thing year after year, I think it might get a little stale. So after 50 years I've got no problem with Topps trying something new.
We agree to disagree !

OK...... Here we go:
I agree with Rawgoo ...... The BASIC PREMISE was to spoof actual products available in retail stores.... PERIOD........
The 1st-16th series was a genius idea born upon those of us in our youth enjoyed laughing at the humor of MAD Magazine and Cracked Magazine ...... we got it!
Fun and immature laughter based on a cartoon rendition of a product (Spy Vs Spy or the Shadow Knows series in MAD Magazine)
The OVERABUNDANCE!!!!!! of 134,456,096 versions of a card (a.k.a. parallels) has diluted the brand in my opinion, much like the NFL with 4+ versions of football...... tooooo much!!!!!
We need to keep our Wacky Brand BACK TO BASICS!!!!!
30-33 Cards
1 (not 98378346576348965837587364) Puzzle / Checklist
and MAYBE a cool chase / bonus card
I love my Wacky's and the commercialization of an awesome brand is being diluted in the attempt to impress I do not know who???
RED / BLUE / LUDLOW THIS AND THAT!!!! / GREEN / SEPIA / LEATHER / WOOD ...... WTF not have every color in the Rainbow!!!!
a TRUE enthusiast appreciates the ART which is why Norm started this whole rat race so many years ago...... there are sooo many talented artists and when I think of Neil (THE MAN!!!!!!!) and up and comers like Chad and Joe G., I have HOPE for the future.......
We need to take a hard look in the Wacky Mirror - KISS (Keep it simple stupid)
BINDERS!!!!! For the Love of G-d!!!!!
Get back to what worked in 1st - 16th!
(Drop the mic now....)
PEACE!!!!!
KISS......is exactly right the 50th should be a tribute to the artists/gag writers from that era,to the original series,to the wacky ads and the posters. They could do subtle tweaks to the tribute wacky ads and posters, they could put limited edition, highly sought after mashup cards(maybe 100) adding 1 of the these cards to 100 sets.By mashup I mean taking 2 iconic characters from the OS like Run Tony and the Raid pest from series 8 and put them onto 1 card.
ANS series was a waste of energy and time, boy Topps sure did take our money for years from this era !
Yes, no die-cuts. The sticker will be the entire thing.
Blasphemy!
Any Wackys are better than no Wackys! ANS has been terrific across the board - not 100%-every-title-a-winner, of course, but the high points are very high.
Also, you can just ignore all the border variations. It's pretty easy. There's still plenty of other interesting things to chase. I think the medallions and patches are wonderful.
We even got a new poster series!
Ok, yeah, the MLB series, I'll grant you was a waste of time and space. But otherwise it's all been good-to-great.
I said what I said about ANS figuring it would provoke some replies . . .
Yep. Beyoncé, Trump, Hello Kitty. All fakes to get pop culture into the set. Like the mlb wackys did with baseball. Does nothing for me.There actually is a Queen Bee Honey (the Beyoncé parody). But I think that's coincidence. It doesn't seem to come in squeeze bottles.
I don't mind some political references in my wackys . . .
Speaking of the OLDS subset,I hope that two of the 10 Wackys included in it are SpaghettoOs and Stingers. Those were left out of the previous five series, and I'd love to see them finally released.(By the way, can anyone tell me what the full name of Stingers is? I know that the real name is Dolly Madison Zingers, but what's the "Dolly Madison"part called in the Wacky?(I've seen a picture of the other one and I know it's called Urban-American SpaghettoOs)).
Thinking out loud for a few moments...
Where is the Norman Saunders memorial card.. Where are the Art Spiegelman and Jay Lynch Wacky Packages Hall of Fame trading card inserts? Hell, maybe even Arthur Shorin?
Where are the behind-the-scenes or similar rare Wacky related photos inserts?
There are ways to create truly iconic and special elements of a set that could anchor back so strongly to the history of this wonderful pop-cultural entertainment, a product parody sticker series that inspired so many other things and so many artists and that transcended what it was to become more. There could have been ways to touch upon that, to reflect it and acknowledge it.
At least those are the kinds of things I would have sought to put together for this, if it was me. But it wasn't! :-)
This feels like a little too much "been there done that" with the parallels and shaped sketches, and what is new-and-different just isn't landing very well to me.
I think they realized that a set centered on nostalgia would have limited the potential target audience. Sort of like the reaction to "Forest Gump" outside the US. Without living it, you wouldn't understand it or its historical significance. However, a subset or two of these would have been really nice.
I think turning their back on some of the fundamental elements of what made Wacky Packages what they were, what made them work - that is a mistake. This sums it up for me. But, as Jason also states, it might work and maybe even well. Let's see...
Dr. Ono,
Thanks for the shout out! Ironically I was thinking about how they have screwed us out of binders for the last couple of years and how I will probably have to create ANOTHER custom one..... AGAIN!
May be Wacky Force Be With You!
Re-hashing the same card over and over again does not deserve my money - do something creative:
1. Lenticuler(??) with the Original Wacky and the actual product (33 Cards)
2. Artist signed cards (33 avail - limit to 25 signed per 33 cards)
3. Random inserts for a uncut sheet signed by all the artists
4. 3-D Cards (33 avail and only 1:1000 in Collector only with 25 of each)
That is IT!
Celebrate the past and KEEP IT SIMPLE!!!!
P.S. . . . . Kool Mail In stuff from the real wax wrappers and ....... GUM BABY!!!
Same here. I think all of those"work" well as Wackys. Especially love Reaganets. It makes me laugh for some reason.
And from 2005

Those are not in the set. I don;t even know what Stingers is. All ten are new (old) Old School gags
I seem to remember in one of the OLDS posts on one of the checklists(I don't know which one) that Stingers was mentioned. Other than that, that's all I know. I don't even know what it looks like. I'll find out which one it is and get back to you. Update:Stingers was mentioned in the post WP Old School 5 thread-SPOILERS(reply #10(6-5-14)).
Okay, thanks for telling me. I didn't even know it wasn't an actual sticker. That means the only one left to release is SpaghettoOs.
With 5 cards per bonus pack, this could be a nice, large subset.
Patrick, quite true. I know the original series has been reprinted to death but could this be a first? Has ANS ever been reprinted before?Well, if the '80s description is correct, I'm guessing just the 1985 set and maybe some of the modified albums stickers?
Well, if the '80s description is correct, I'm guessing just the 1985 set and maybe some of the modified albums stickers?
Unless that really should have been the '00s in the write up?
Patrick, i believe it might be a typo. The sales sheet describes it as best if the 00's and shows an ANS title.Yep, you're right. I looked at the sales sheet again. Definitely '00s.
If anyone finds a place that has a pre-sale for the blaster (or blister?) boxes, can you post it here? I'm always for pre-ordering a few.
Muchas Gracias

Celebrity Wacky Packages? They won't spoof real products!
Why not a lost Wackys subset? - even include a few of the never released 2014 Star Wars Wacky Packages entries!
Also: Will the Old School Wacky stickers in insert hobby packs be entries planned if there had been a Wacky Packages Old School 6th. series?
All the Old School stickers in the 50th set were from roughs I had already saved from previous series so yes, they would have been in OLDS6. I have all of OLDS 6 written and draw and am working on the paintings now.

I am researching pricing on pre-orders for collector boxes and the best price I have found is DA Cardworld at $79.99. Has anyone found a better price?
Andrew
Wait.. is Old School 6 a confirmed thing now? Did I miss an entire thread?
Yes, it comes out later this coming year. Will be done the end of January. Lots of good products I've always wanted to use.
I was looking at the sell sheet for this release again and noticed the Gold Parallels are 1/1. Have we ever had 1/1 Gold Cards for the base set before?
I wonder what these cold cards will go for and how cool they will look? If they are the Mustard Type Golds we have had as of late I will not be interested. If they are metallic gold that will be pretty cool. If there is a title I really like maybe I will go after all versions this time.
The only 1/1 that I can think of would be the chrome superfractors.
I'll be doing sketch cards for this release and will have five regular, two shaped and two panoramic returns available. Message me if you want to reserve any of them and for pricing. Thanks.
I placed my pre-order with DA Cardworld for 3 Collector Boxes of this release. Price was $79.95 with free shipping for orders over $200. That was the best price I could find. I plan on buying at least 1 Gravity Feed at retail if I can find it in an excell shipping box at Target or it looks untouched on the shelf. I will also buy 3 or 4 Blaster Boxes at retail. Hoping to pull some cool sketches, a Medallion card and a 1/1 Gold Base Card from these purchases. What are others planning to do?
I'm really looking forward to this big anniversary set. It'll be my ninth Wacky related set and I plan on really digging into this one. Most of my previous sets have been markers with a bit of acrylic but for this I plan on doing all acrylics. Mini paintings focusing only on the sixteen original series.
Jason, 9 series is super impressive. Your approach sounds like a blast! I assume a bit of color as well?

Did someone comment on the die cutting of O5?someone must have complained, because there will no longer be die-cut Wackys.
I did not get a box of that series.
Thought I read there was a lot of cut through stickers....
True?
I'll be picking up some of the Collector's Hobby boxes - but the flyer stating '1 hit per box' sounds incredibly pathetic. Am I misremembering, or didn't the last release have 3 to 4 hits per box?
Can someone please elaborate what Hits per box is, sound like Mafia lingo :]
A "Hit" is basically a highly limited card. Sketches are usually considered 'Hits". But not all highly limited cards are called "Hits". Each Collector Box of Wacky 50th will contain at least One: Sketch, Artist Autograph or Medallion Card. Those are the Hits. Red Ludlows come one per Collector Box but are not considered Hits. A gold Border 1/1 card, Red Border Card 1/10 or a Printing plate is considered a Hit but is not a sure thing. If you got one of those your box would have two Hits.
The term "Hit" was devised to convey what incentive a person has to spring for the higher priced Collector boxes.

The red and gold borders aren't hits and can be found in the retail packs as well. I don't believe that border color, back image or material variation has ever been considered a hit, even when exclusive to the Collector boxes.
Below is the "Hit" breakdown per the flyer: No mention of Plates as they would constitute a bonus rare card pull and are not part of the Three items which they promise to insert one of per Collector Box. If you get a Plate in your box ; you will still get one of the three items from the list as your "Hit". I do consider the Golds which will be 1/1 made as Bonus rare cards. I guess the Plates and Golds are not technically "Hits" ; but when you pull one ;they may have the same mental effect on you as a "Hit" would. So the same Euphoric impact without the actual "Hit" designation. So you may do a "Happy Dance" without receiving a "Hit".Not sure why you would consider "all-new artwork" as a hit. That's just a description of the basic set, i.e. This is not a reprint set.
They are calling the Medallions and Auto's Premium Inserts; but the Medallions are not listed as "Hit"s. Not sure what to make of that.
Copied from the Flyer:
ONE HIT PER HOBBY COLLECTOR BOX!
• All-new artwork!
• Sketch Cards!
• Artist Autographs!
Copied from Beckett News:
Other premium inserts in 2017 Topps Wacky Packages 50th Anniversary include Artist Autographs and Medallion cards (Hobby Collector only).
Not sure why you would consider "all-new artwork" as a hit. That's just a description of the basic set, i.e. This is not a reprint set.
Page 3 of the flyer lists the breakdown of the hits, as I described, with the printing plates included.
Golds are tough like the superfractors, and not a per box guarantee like they were in the last set or two.
Plates are a hit though.
There actually is a Queen Bee Honey (the Beyoncé parody). But I think that's coincidence. It doesn't seem to come in squeeze bottles.

Do we think ShoppTopps.com will launch a Wacky 50th Section on their site soon?I can see that happening. The question is what will be sold there? What would we like to see sold there? More 24 hour only cards? Postcards? Limited 50th sets? Time will tell.
My preference would be non-political Wackys of real products, with the traditional black border, available for at least a week. And, most definitely, NOT $10 a sticker!!!!!
Where is QUEEN BEE HONEY sold at? Dollar Tree? Dollar General? Family Dollar? Aldi? You can only get it from their website or in a few local stores in Massachusetts. Not available nationally (unless you count their website as national).

Where are people buying the hobby boxes from, and what is the going rate for a single hobby box?
I recommend Blowout Cards for buying boxes.I just bought 2 collector and 2 hobby boxes from Blowout. All I really care about is a base set, a few color variants as examples and a nice sketch or two.

Am I the only one who's still confused about what exactly is included in this set and what sort of boxes one needs to buy to get the complete set? I won't be pursuing a master set or even close to it, but I'd like to plan out what makes the most sense for me to get the most bang for my buck. Maybe I'm just too distracted by other things in life or perhaps it's that this series seems to be even more complex than previous ones.
Im with you brother, its been one big Topps mystery on this one. I thought we would get so much more announcement and visuals.Try reading thru this (http://www.beckett.com/news/2017-topps-wacky-packages-50th-anniversary/)

Thanks! I haven't seen any info about bonus boxes. Anyone know what to expect in those? I often find they are a pretty good value.Bonus boxes look like a good deal again, even better than the chrome boxes.
Bonus boxes look like a good deal again, even better than the chrome boxes.
5 packs + 1 Bonus pack per box.
Bonus pack contains 5 Best of the '80s stickers.
Plus, the bonus boxes are supposed to be the only ones with the 4-panel puzzle sketches.
Maybe I missed it but no one actually knows when the 50th anniversary date really is, correct? Isn't it true that Topps does not have records of when the Diecuts first debuted to the public?I recall this being mentioned years ago - we can probably go by the trademark filing through the Patent and Trademark Office.

Steve, I agree and can't wait for the Anniversary set to come out! This is the big Wacky set for the year and will be a blast! I hope my local Target gets a ton as it's always cool to see Wackys in the wild.
[/quote
Target is my choice of spotting Wackies in the wild too! A
I got OVERLY excited when I heard, but DACardWorld still shows a 3/29 release date...... Friday Arrival can NOT arrive quick enough!!!!!Wednesday is the new Friday, is that quick enough?
Weren't the dates originally 3/15?
Wackys usually hit Targets starting on Mondays. It just depends when they stock the aisle from the Excell Cases. I hunt down the cases on Monday and ask to crack them to obtain unmolested product.
By Monday do you mean tomorrow, or next Monday? (The 3rd of April)official release is listed everywhere as Wed 3/29.
Best of luck on the hunt today.
Was it actually cancelled though?Old joke...in fact, maybe older than you are. It's not cancelled...just got my shipping notice from Blowout. Should have them Wednesday. Yeehaw!!
Cards are starting to show up on ebay. No sketches yet.nice. and packaging too!
More like black backgrounds right? Gives them almost a 3D rendering.yep, jus like the earlier black canvas, but without the texture. I think that style was far and away the favorite of most folks.
The pack searchers have struck already. There's a pano sketch "Hot Pack" on ebay.
I, too, found the bonus boxes, fat packs and a gravity feed box at a Target here in Dearborn, MI this morning.
Interesting set -
10 "Groups" of 9 cards a piece (so not numbered 1 through 90)
Crazy Music
Crazy TV
Crazy Politics
Crazy Pop Culture
Crazy Celebrity
Crazy Movie
Crazy Video Game
Crazy App
Crazy Cereal
50th Anniversary
Best of the 80's and Best of the 90's subsets (Sets of 10)
yep, jus like the earlier black canvas, but without the texture. I think that style was far and away the favorite of most folks.
The purple and aqua "mod" backgrounds inspire nothing in me. Neither do the "maze" backgrounds.luckily none of those 3 designs are background variations, they're just the ones used for three of the 'best of' chase cards.
Was expecting more...
Are there any classic titles in this set or is it just all new parodies?
Here's a few I did:
It looks like the Old School sub-set also has the thin borders and doesn't have the classic Wacky die cut. That's too bad as I had hoped those would be done that way at least!
(https://s17.postimg.org/v8vlijyez/wp_orvilledeadenbacherfinal_gross.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/v8vlijyez/)
Dave, here's what I'm seeing on eBay.
(https://s2.postimg.org/txq3t30et/IMG_6061.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/txq3t30et/)
Dave, I see what you're saying but I'm just disappointed it's not a classic Wacky THICK border. I had hoped that would be maintained for the Old School sub-set.
I'll ask if they can pump them up a bit more for the OLDS6 release. I'll take these lines over those teeny base set lines any day though. I like the cards with the full black or the blue bleed but the white or silver borders with the tiny black lines don't do it for me.
Are any of these actually stickers? They are *all* stickers.
The majority of artwork is very good, but some falls a bit flat and doesn't quite seem to meet the high standards I've come to expect and embrace.
(https://s8.postimg.org/wp6i65x4h/s-l1600-1.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/wp6i65x4h/)
(https://s4.postimg.org/lurghjeh5/s-l1600.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/lurghjeh5/)
I see a redemption card up on eBay for one of the dual pano sketches. that seems to be a first.
I guess that means topps at least realized putting the pano cards in the packs would be too easy to search for.
Although the pano's were only supposed to be in the Collector boxes, which aren't searchable, so a bit of a mystery.
one update to what topps had promised for the set and then didn't deliver on - the black ludlows were supposed to be #'d to 99. But they are only to 25.
The artists autos are also out of 25 which I imagine means they're fairly common in collector's boxes and should come down in cost quick.ah nice, a boost from the usual 15
Just saw the complete series and Im TOTALLY disappointed. Just a lot of made up current event, spur of the moment gags of which a vast majority are made up stuff. Not that many parody of actual products. Was expecting more but its not working for me. Will get a cheap set and bail on this set
Love the Old School cards!
I hate to say it, but I agree. Too much politics and pop culture and current events, not enough product parodies. Great artwork by the usual suspects, but not exactly what I was expecting in terms of content.....
Hopefully with PoD more than filling that market, we can get back to the tried and true Wacky formula.
Agreed. These look great!
SPOILER: Here are the Old School 10 cards
So the first of the oversized art cards have hit eBay and they look super fun. Also wrapped to ensure freshness!

Love the Old School cards!
Thanks everyone, glad you like the OLDS cards. I think the 6th series is even better, I got to do a lot of products I've always wanted to include plus cigarettes and alcohol are back in it.
Always wanted to do a Star Trek Wacky and as they say, be careful what you wish for. Can't say anything about the final card but here's the gag I designed for any Star Trek fans out there!

totally different topic - but I'm seeing two different value boxes. I think that means there's finally one for Target and another for Wal*mart again
And once you find that "rarity", I don't believe there's a chance for anything else special in that box.
So does that mean that my other box would have a "rarity" in it? (Because yes, there were no other specials in that box)

"Lowlights" is a bit edgy, considering the cultural trend of political correctness and hyper-sensitivity.
Currently more than 1 in 10 children are being "diagnosed" with anxiety and attention-deficit "disorders".

I like it!
What I am about to say is in NO way a critique of the actual art and designs put forth by the artists but I am prepared for the fallout. Thank god for pulling a smokin' joe autograph in the first pack I opened. There are a few things In society I am sick and tired of seeing: Celebs and Politics. Need I say more. What I noticed mostly was how much like the GPK releases this 50th set was - the categories, the poop and fart jokes, etc. Like others wrote, it didn't seem like a Wacky Package release....A
What has me perplexed is the intended target of this series. Who is it exactly? Those who are interested in the teenie bopper celebrities sure as hell are not the older, more focused collector whom I would assume would be familiar with such a long anniversary and I doubt I am making a false statement when saying that isn't us (into the bubblegum pop crap).
ATTENTION: The views and opinions expressed in this post are soley those of Soremel. These views and opinions do not necessarily represent those of the collective force of this forum. Soremel is old and cranky, therefore, his opinions should be totally ignored... or better yet, viewed as the delusional insights of a straightjacket clad madman... don't make eye contact... just slowly walk away... :P
I was hoping that this set would have put more emphasis on the original 16 series, or a nod to at least ONE title from each of the series.
Over the last few series, there seems to have been more of an emphasis on producing as many parallels, chase cards, limited variations, etc. than there was in art direction. While there are a number of well done pieces in this set, the number of poorly executed pieces is alarming. Years ago, I recall Fleer's "Crazy Labels" sets being dubbed the "red-headed step-children" of parody cards. Today, many of the titles from the Crazy Labels sets are superior to some of the recent Wacky Packages offerings. It appears that a "quantity over quality" mentality has stricken this brand.
When I saw the sneek peaks of David's Old School contributions to the Anniversary set, I considered only purchasing those cards as they seemed to hold true to the Wacky legacy. I was extremely disappointed to see that the end product had reduced the traditional black borders to anemic single stroke lines. Same thing goes with the lack of formed die-cutting (kiss-cutting) of the stickers. Topps totally abandoned two of the characteristics that helped make the brand what it is. Leaving these two features out of a 50th anniversary set is shameful. It's even more ludicrous when one considers the Topps vs. Top Shelf Enterprises lawsuit where a bone of contention was the use of "the black borders" on the "Silly Supermarket" sets.
I will not be collecting any part of this set. Being a completist, the amount of "extras" needed to put a whole master set together goes way beyond my budget. If the set had more quality and adherence to the true core of the Wacky Packages brand, I would have considered going all out, but I'm investing my time and funds in upgrading and completing my 1967-1977 collection.
I think a FAR better 50th Anniversary tribute would have been to continue the Chrome set and release the 4th thru 16th series. Heck, maybe even release the 3rd Abrams book... A little closure is good.
Just my two cents (mic drop) :-X
John, well the intended market is 8-10 year olds. I think that been true for retail Wackys since the start.
A shout out to Paul Harris as he came up with the concept for the Old School Arthur Treacherous.
Besides the 10 Old School pieces my contributions to this series are:
Concept: Adam Levine Maroon 5 O'Clock Shadow Razor (Camera), Big Bang Popcorn (Smokin Joe), Bill Gates Windows Cleaner (Camera), Blake Shelton Country Cliche Biscuits (Camera), Kong Banana Split Ice Cream (Smokin Joe), Jennifer Lawrence Trip Planner (Smokin Joe), Curby Gumballs (Simko), Wonderous Pasta (Smokin Joe), Zefron 6-Pack Soda (Smokin Joe)

The Old School borders don't look too bad. Thinner but not horribly thin like the base stuff. However, I'm going to plead to have the full size on the OLDS6 release. Not sure the die-cut will come back though. That really adds to the cost and the numbers are just not there anymore.in a way, these thin borders make them look ever more truly old-school, where the sticker background has been peeled off ;)

Question: The Best of 00's cards are only in retail packs. Blaster Boxes have 5 retail packs plus 5 Best 80's cards. Do the packs in the Blaster box have Best of 00's since they are retail packs?the packs in the Value boxes are not retail packs, but Value box packs, and do not have Best of cards.
Andrew
the packs in the Value boxes are different packs than the retail packs, and do not have Best of cards.
they are the same 7 Black, 1 Blue, with odds for hits. But no odds for the Best of's.
Well, I opened 2 collector boxes, 2 hobby boxes, and 5 blaster boxes. My short, initial take on this set: The Old School cards are far and away the best thing in this set. I only got 7 out of 10, though. Boo.I had to open all 4 of my collector's boxes to get all 10 of the Old School Set.

I splurged and pre-ordered a collector's case since I knew I wouldn't be around for the 100th anniversary. They arrived today and I have been opening and collating this evening. My "big hits" were...
7 medallion cards = 4 blue backgrounds (1 of 99), 3 grey background (1 of 50)
1 can shaped setch
1 redemption card for a dual artist panorama card
1 silver border
1 artist autograph
I hope to have a want/trade list posted tomorrow.

I've opened 4 collector boxes so far and sketches seem to be the hardest items to poll - congrats on your panoramic!
Unscientifically of course, Joe, I find what may appeal to kids far far far outweighed by the opposite. Yes some of the bugglegum artists might be recognized by children and a few other things but Pac Man, Brexit, etc.., not so much. Furthermore, I don't think kids these days care about Wacky Packages let alone a monumental anniversary. I often wonder if the intended target is still kids, does Topps honestly think such an age group is interested in autographs, sketches and other chase cards let alone the cost of a collectors box? To me it seems as if Topps wants to spread the series too thin rather than appealing to one set group. Kids only seem interested in cards dealing with Pokemon or MMORPG cards with in game redeemable gear.
2 Collectors boxes, 2 Hobby boxes, and 5 Blasters. Here's my pulls:
- Tomb Radiance autographed - #14/25
- CheeZillas autographed - #13/25
- Dual Artist pano sketch
- Gadzooka silver border - #30/50
- Dr Pooper medallion - #32/99
- Comit medallion - #1/50
Plus: 10 black Ludlows and 5 red Ludlows
(https://s23.postimg.org/nzjy1012v/50th_Finds_1.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/nzjy1012v/)
Nice Pulls AND a Pano Sketch. I opened 3 Collector Boxes and no sketches. Also, How do we feel about no 9 card puzzles in this set? I miss them.
I pulled a Comit medallion with a yellow background (presumably supposed to evoke "gold") -- it's labeled 1/1 on the back
The original WP didn't have to have such a thick border, yet they did anyway. Was this to allow more room for error in the die-cut process of fifty years ago? That was always my belief, but others have indicated that it was to help make the art "pop" on the card/sticker. I suppose both could apply.

I did exactly the same thing with my Smokin' Joe signature card! It was only going through everything again that I realized what it was.
One thing is for certain (or at least almost for certain).....no one will ever own a complete set of these yellow medallions! That would be quite a feat, if anyone even tried!
That would be quite a feat, if anyone even tried!
I also collect Hot Wheels. That collecting community deals with the same corporate strategy that we do. Retail wackies are aimed at 8 year olds just like retail Hot Wheels are. Hot Wheels collectors want Muscle/ Classic cars and at retail they find vehicles shaped like dinosaurs with glow in the dark wheels. Mattel still offers collectors cars they want at premium prices via their web site. Topps will continue to offer Collector boxes with chase items designed to make collectors happy and occasionally sets like Old School via their site. We just need to understand that collectors probably account for 40 percent of brand sales and kids for 60 percent.
I agree that kids will not appreciate Political Wackies in the the 50th set ; but Topps probably reasoned that their adult collectors would love that subset. So of the 10 subsets in the retail boxes 2 may be intended for collectors: Political and 50th Anniversary. The other 8 are great for the 8 year olds: Cereal, Movies, TV, Pop Culture, Apps, Video Games, Music and Celebrities. Throw in Old School in the Collector Boxes and you have all your bases covered if you are Topps. So when I judge this set I look at the cards in the Political, Anniversary and Old School sets as meant for me. That's 28 cards which is what we used to get in a Wacky Release back in the day. Of those 28 I like about half of them so that's good enough for me. Thanks Topps.
Andrew
These are awesome! Could you please post reference images of the actual products you used...something for the comparison art-chive? Thanks!
Andrew,
I think everyone reading this post would have to agree that some of the artwork is "lacking in quality." This didn't have to be, however. And for the life of me, I can't see how Topps justified this, anniversary or no anniversary.
Reply:
The quality aspect is certainly a factor; but it may be addressed by the fact that they used a number of new artists and some of those artists possess a style that does not appeal to most people.
As far as the political/current events go, haven't we (the adults who've been paying high prices) already had our fill? Moreover, I doubt that many will understand and/or appreciate the humor in these pieces five years from now, let alone fifty. Many of the satires are based upon impetuous comments that are shocking when first uttered, but hardly ground-shaking or even worth committing to memory.
Reply:
The political cards in the set were done a while back as these sets have much different timelines than the on-demand cards. IE; Topps did not know at the time the 50th political cards were drawn; how many would be out by now.
You make many valid points about percentages and the 50th deserving more; but its 2017 and ANY wackies are good vs. no wackies is my position. Hope for the best, appreciate what you get, offer feedback for the future (which you excel at) and hope for the best in the future. That's all we can do. At least we have the Philly show and dinner to celebrate the 50th with the artists and fans. See you there.

Haha thanks, I got 'wrapped' up in my thoughtshaha. Well, maybe we can have a 'real' WP 50th anniversary in 2023, to celebrate the 1st series sticker set, and have RED wrappers for that.
PM Sent???? You're gonna leave us all in suspense with that!
So I just finished putting my 'Wacky Packages 50th' set in sleeves, and looking over the set. I then looked over the MLB-themed set from last year, and then the past few GPK sets since 30th....
And I realized that my joy and love for the new sets is totally and fully dead at this point. It's not JUST that they've eliminated the die-cuts from both franchises. It's not JUST that they've broken the sets into odd and incoherent sub-sets, ruining the numbering scheme and the extra material on the card backs. It's not JUST the obsession with pop-culture and politics. It's not JUST that Topps doesn't seem to understand the history or appeal of either franchise anymore. And it's not JUST the over reliance on as untalented a hack as Junwei Im. But it's the cumulative effect, taken all together, that leaves me with zero confidence or even interest in what Topps may do with either brand in the future.
In short, I'm done. There's still some 70s stuff I'd like, and some of the bonus cards and insert stuff I haven't started gathering yet. But as far as new product is concerned, I'm done.
I finished opening up my first box of Collector's Editions, and wondering how everyone else is doing with what they're discovering.all that in just your first box? >(
I'm happy, but I wish the sketches were a little easier to get. These are going to be killer!
I finished opening up my first box of Collector's Editions, and wondering how everyone else is doing with what they're discovering. You found a yellow also? That is great 2 have been found by collectors!
I got two autographed cards (Simko and Im)
No sketches at all, dang it
8 Medallions, one per box. Two are identical, one yellow though. LOVE these things!
7 different oversized art cards (which are very cool), one dupe. The set is 10, I believe, and they included
Dave's Old School Crushed Berries as the 10th title, even greater!
One printing plate
Two red backgrounds, maybe 4 silvers?
Lots of black ludlows, several red ones, too.
I'm happy, but I wish the sketches were a little easier to get. These are going to be killer!
I feel your pain. I was left speechless as well at what was suppose to be a celebration is now a pile of cards I will probably never look again. Im also going back to some 15th and 16th series that Im missing.
Im not sure Topps doesnt care anymore- its cheap gags, amateurish computer art and uninteresting topics. If it sells, they will continue this direction sadly.
I ordered a regular box and bonus box from Steel City Collectibles, they should arrive soon.
Even checked a Target store recently and no 50th. Anniversary packs are there in the store.
no, first case (8 boxes worth).
I wish..... !!

The decision makers at Topps who steer the WPs should be avid collectors / artists within the ranks, not some pencil head 4 years out of college with a business major in philosophy with a minor in art.

I stopped in a Target yesterday, thinking maybe I'd pick up a couple of packs to see whether or not I want to buy a set, but no luck.
I confirmed today that Olds6 will have the thick, classic black borders.Wow, you just answered a question that's been in the back of my mind the last few days. Around the time speculation began about a 50th milestone set, you'd hinted that another Old School set had been green-lighted. When I saw the 50th set has the 10-card subset I feared that might have been the extent of what you meant. Great to hear another full set is in the works. It feels like forever since we got a truly solid new release.
That I do not know. I'll ask and request. I'm sure they will not be actually diecut though. Unfortunately there are a few concessions that had to be made to get another OLDS series out. I don't stick them so for me it's a none issue.
Bummer. I actually tend to stick a set or two of these on various things, over time. And the die-cut is the "rock and roll" in the sticker. Unfortunate that the creative directors in charge can't grasp that.
If the concession is the thing that gets the series made, so be it. It is what it is. A concession is a concession, and it's too bad because anytime you remove a functional element of something, you've taken something away and made it "less than" it was. There's no getting around it. But as disappointing as it is, for me at least it isn't a deal breaker.
I'd be curious to run the numbers on how much higher boxes would have to be priced at to get an Old School product produced WITHOUT concessions. Is it $5 more a box to get the die-cut stickers? $20? $1? In my experience, people tend to be okay paying a little more to get a complete experience. We aren't talking about selling milk at the grocery store, after all. We're talking about making fun of the brands selling the milk. And the experience of that matters.
I will take old school without diecuts as long as we get puzzle backs. I miss that in the 50th Set.
I confirmed today that Olds6 will have the thick, classic black borders.

Glad to hear the 10 year old enjoyed them most as that's really what it's about (I think).I am NOT going to ramble about this. I'm just going to say that I could not disagree more. This set was not for 10 year olds. Or, at least, it should not have been. It's a 50th anniversary set, for goodness sake. 'nuff said.

It's a 50th anniversary set, for goodness sake. 'nuff said.I think the really objectionable aspect here is that Topps gypped us older Wacky collectors by doing essentially an ANS reboot targeting a young audience, under the RUSE of an anniversary set. They were not interested in producing anything close to a legit tribute set, heritage set, legacy set, whatever the term is that describes what most of us were likely anticipating. I would have been far happier with a Flashback 3 set, same as 1 and 2 with all the psychedelic colors, slap a 50th Anniversary logo on the wrapper, choose some OS classics that have never been reprinted, keep the medallions, sketches, etc., done.
Does anyone know which title(s) Brent Engstrom painted for the 50th set?
Thanks everyone, glad you like the OLDS cards. I think the 6th series is even better, I got to do a lot of products I've always wanted to include plus cigarettes and alcohol are back in it.
I'll take old school without diecuts as well. I just think, well, why should we have to? What's the price differential per box of getting the die-cuts? Is it dramatic?
It would appear I'm in the minority on this. Which is fine. I'm likely in the minority on many of my preferences.
I just think, if when Mattel started their Masters of the Universe Classics series, which was also a direct-to-collector proposition. If, realizing most hardcore collectors never opened the packages of their action figures, if the bean counters then said "why do these have to be articulated - think of the savings by making them one chunk of plastic?" Would it have mattered if they were made that way? They're never moving if they never come out of the package, right? Of course, at that point, they wouldn't be action figures anymore. I maintain that the same is true here, with regard to the diecuts.
But I do get it. I assume that most collectors are fine as long as things still go into 9-pocket pages. I just find it strange (though understandable) that 9-pocket pages and other similar storage supplies possibly have more influence on current design choices than the original qualities of the thing in question.
I just think this is one of those changes that, like good lighting in a film or even a restaurant, it's a critically important aspect and it is something that most people, when asked, think doesn't matter. But like all great design elements, it does, and people notice. Like the thick border, etc.
I mean, if the desire to make the art bigger was the justification for thinning out the black borders, why not just make the cards half an inch bigger? The art would be bigger.
Of course that is something people get... Because they won't fit in the 9-pocket page anymore.

Somewhat related, I just ordered the new Star Wars Topps Classic Sticker book.. which reproduces a lot of the classic 70's and 80'sstickers from the Topps Star Wars trading card sets. And within that book, they are die-cut. So the stickers are die-cut, just like they are for the successful run of DK Ultimate Sticker books (with licenses like Disney, Star Wars, Lego, etc). And this is a book that, like those DK books, is targeted at young readers. The kids.
So it seems to me that, losing the diecuts is a design decision that isn't targeting kids or nostalgic adults. It's just a cost-cutting, feature-removing measure. And I think they should have chosen to give us the option to pay a little more to get a complete product.
On the plus side, Abrams are the publishers behind this Star Wars Topps Classic Sticker book, and they also did the digest sized Wacky Packages books. Maybe they'll find it worthwhile to do a Wacky Packages Topps Sticker book at some point. And keep the die-cut alive since Topps may not be interested in doing so themselves.

Great to hear this news, Dave! And while I don't own the Old School subset in the 50th set, I look forward to picking it up. Overall, I had set my sights fairly low for this 50th set and I don't think it even lived up to that. But I do like the work you've done in this set, Dave, and look forward to OLDS6, which I think will really be what Wackys are about. Any idea when they might be on sale?
I'm not sure but I believe it's towards the later part of the year. I'm not even sure in what form it will be sold (same as the other OLDS series, online or a new format all together)
My understanding is that it will be issued solely as compensation to United Airlines passengers for volunteering to give up their seats during overbooked situations. Instead of a $1,000 voucher, it's 20 unopened boxes of OLDS6.
Marc, too funny! Could you imagine if the entire forum was on a plane and that was announced? There would have been a fight all right but it wouldn't have involved airline security!
It was interesting the fellow, who supposedly was knocked unconscious before he was dragged out, was able to hold on to his phone.
Here's my screen shot of the video. I refuse to add the wacky tacky caption, "I need to get on the forum! I need to get on the forum!"

Although totally appropriate if followed by... "It's one of Neil's midnight sales in 5 minutes!"

I'm laughing so hard, my milk came out my nose...don't do that again!
What is it the kids say today? Sorry, Not sorry.
Whippersnapper!
Anyone notice the trading thread on this release is a tad light on participation?.......Seems to be a clue as to the level of interest in this one
Andrew, how was it for the last set? If Topps moves towards more PoD releases it might mean the end of trading, sadly.
Go play on your own stoop!!

Yeah. Pretty disappointing for me. I have never, ever bought anything more than already-assembled base sets of each series since ANS1. I guess I'm not a 'true' collector in that sense. But, this time around, I thought, "50th Anniversary. Should be great. Should be lots of sketches, extras, rarities, etc. I'm in!" So, for the first time ever, I bought Collector's and Hobby boxes, blaster boxes, and some fat packs hoping to be able to trade for some other items that I've always wanted. I thought I'd really be 'in the mix', so to speak..... Other than a couple of small trades with Sco(o)t and DrDeal, it's been radio silence. Heck, nobody even wants the base sets that I have for trade or $12 purchase. Kinda bummed, to be honest. Probably just go back to buying sets off ePay
:-[ cheer up Brian, I will trade with you at the Philly show!Sounds good Mark :great:
Don't think of it like that. I have plenty of sets and stuff to sell as well, sometimes there's not many people who want to trade.
Finally had a chance to really open some packs today.Put some roller marks on 'em and I'm in!
One of the highlights, certainly, is the Old School sticker subset! Lots of great art and ideas.
And something I'm surprised no one has mentioned about them yet - there's a wax stain that runs down the center of the card!
A little touch to imitate the wax wrapper stains seen on so many original cards back in the day.

yea but somebody complained about that already - NEWBIEs - :] :] :]
Finally pulled as sketch on my 2nd Case - 3rd Box .... :-X :-X :-X - box sketch - will post pics..That took a minute or two :-\
Just pulled this from a Target value pack...

Very nice !!I think I like yours a little better. Like the color! :D
That took a minute or two :-\
my point being that someone posted that they pulled NO Sketches after opening 3 cases...Topps was real stingy on the sketches for this series!!should have been at least 2-3 per case....with all the artiest working on this series...
Where are the '00 chase cards being found ?in the regular retail packs from the gravity feed, with odds of 1 in every 3 packs.
Here is my Cheezarillas grand slam and artist autograph cards...

Here's my roughs for the series: Old SchoolThe Old School cards were the highlight of the 50th set for me. Good work, and more please ;)
Still hunting for a Cheezillas plate. I did miss out on the Topps Vault blank back Cheezillas though.
Sorry, my sarcasm didn't come through very well. I was agreeing with you, as in, that took WAY too long to pull a sketch. Sorry if I offended you, wasn't my intention. :D
Very nice !!
Just curious to know, how difficult are Artist Autograph cards to find this time around. I've been hunting for one of mine but no luck yet. Topps had each artist sign 25 (compared to 15 for WP 2015 and 5 for MLB) so I thought there'd be a glut of them this time!
Joe, the autographs aren't too terribly hard to come by. There are about 25 on eBay right now but I have only seen them for 7 different artists so for. Neil Camera, Fred Wheaton, Brent Engstrom, Smokin' Joe, David Gross, Joe Simko and Junghwa Im. So this was 25 autograph cards for each title painted, correct? Maybe I am just seeing the ones for people who had higher number of titles in this set.

I purchased just a few packs to get a sample of the set and this is the only notable pull

Yes, but it is a notable pull! You're lucky! (Could have been much worse off!)
I don't think I worded my post appropriately. Yes, I'm VERY happy with this pull!!! I was shocked to find it! I didn't mean to sound unhappy with it.
Is anyone on the forum trying to complete a set of Artist Autograph cards or are most just getting one either as an example or part of a Grouping?
Joe, i think I have one from everyone but you...

In anguish, did this fellow give himself a scar?I'm thinkin' the "scar" is actually popping veins....
What titles do you like? I think this is a great one. I just noticed the 9 pin connector on top.
Can't really explain why, but this is one of my favorites from the 50th:

Not a real product, but yet in my pop culture mind, it is.
In the end, I'm not sure I ever 100% understood what Topps was after.

Wasn't sure whether to post this here or on "This Week In Your Collection"...
I am generally not the type of collector to assemble a set of these, but having pulled the yellow from a box myself, it seemed natural to finish 'er off. I think it looks pretty cool. Anyone else working on this kinda thing?

Tom, very cool! That set is truly one of a kind! The medallions are a highlight of Wacky Packages 50th but those golds are just too hard to come by!
Has anyone else redeemed a dual artist card? Have you heard anything at all from Topps? I am wonder we we will see these in the next few months. We know they have them in-hand.

I'm wondering why there were redemption cards for the dual artist sketches. Why not just put them in the packs like all the other pano sketches were.
The reason provided by Topps was that they were not completed in time to be put into the packs and still make the promised mid-March release date. But that doesn't explain why it takes 12-15 friggin' weeks to mail out the sketches once you've redeemed.Hmmm, Odd. All the cards, including the dual artists were due on the same date. But yes 12 to 15 weeks is ridiculous.

The story I heard was that all the 50th dual cards were lost by the shipping company. That's why there was redemption cards and not actual sketches in the packs. We recently had to redo them so that is why it took so long. somewhere out there is a fed ex box packed full of dual Wacky sketches that may or may not surface someday.
Give Matt some time - He will have some - HAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAThe dual pano sketches? He put 4 of them up last week.
