Title: Fight the Crickets: Share when you open packs of recent releases
Post by: DrDeal on June 04, 2016, 05:53:41 AM
With the lack of new releases lately; I thought there might be interest in a thread where we share what we find when we open packs  or boxes from one of the  past releases. Since sketch cards have been included for years now in many releases ;there are still lots of cards yet to be found that we would all like to see.  There are also some very tough pulls in some releases like the Super Rare Embroidered Patch Cards and the Altered Art/ Mixed Up Character cards. So when you purchase or trade for or just decide to open a Collector box, Retail box, Blaster Box, Bonus Box, Value Pack or just a few packs of a recent release; post what you opened and what you found.  Pictures of certain cards / sketch's would be great also. I just ordered a Blaster Box of Chrome which I will have in about a week. I will post what I find. If no one shares this interest we can just delete this thread.

OK, I was thinking of starting my own topic on this but here seems a great place to lay it all out. This goes back maybe 4 or 5 months ago. I own a metal detector and before my spinal cord injury I was an avid searcher. Not many days would go by before I would get the itch to dig something out of the ground that someone had lost. In 35+ years of looking I have found many nice things, gold and silver jewelry, hundreds of silver coins...even a large cent from 1828, my oldest coin found. People would call me on the phone and ask me if I could come over and help find lost things, wedding bands and what not, most of the time if the item was actually lost in that area I would find it. I only go out a few times a year anymore, its all my body can handle, but I enjoy it.

OK, lets Flashback to Flashback  2 2008. I do remember buying a gravity feed and some loose packs (maybe 50 to 60) I had ordered 3 24 pack boxes from a local card shop, I bought all these cards on the same day. Over the next few days to weeks I opened a few, just about 10-15 packs in I pulled a Gold, I was very excited, it was my first big wacky score. I put the rest of the packs in a box sealed it but never wrote on the box what was in it. A few months ago I was cleaning out a part of my garage that had stacks of boxes from before my injury (may 2012). I was confused as to what was in the sealed (with packing tape) boxes...the open ones I could see, duh. So I placed all the boxes with tape off to the side. I stacked them next to a shelf/table that I do work on. I started opening the boxes and found that all but 1 of the boxes were filled with books (i like books). I get to the last box, I open it to see all these Beautiful green Flashback 2 unopened packs.(if you have any flashback 2 wrappers check them out they are the coolest wacky wrapper of modern times) I take out a few packs and open them looked and laughed then said now what am I going to do with these loose stickers...so I stuck em. Meanwhile back at the table after I sealed up the box and wrote the contents on it, I looked over and saw my metal detector. Thinking, did I ever take the batteries out at the end of the season? So I pushed the button and on it came. As soon as it cycled through its opening boot it started beeping. It beeps when the coil (the end that detects) is near metal. I thought it might have been the nails in the table but moving the coil away from where it was closer to the box it got louder instead of stopping. Of course I'm thinking what could be causing this very loud target? I ran the machine over the box a few times always getting the same large hit! So I dump the box out, all 100+ packs and start going over each one. About half way through I find the HOT PACK with a PRINTING PLATE in it.

The pack remains UNOPENED...

Why on earth I didn't do this years ago, I have no idea...but thinking about it, I guess I'm just not a pack searcher...Funny how things happen.  ENJOY

Jim

Great story, but why are you keeping Wacky Packages in the garage?  They should be kept in the best room of the house, maybe even given the seat at the head of the table.  :D

I did something very similar using a strong magnet to detect the packs from ANS that had the magnets in them.  It seemed like they were always in the middle of the pack, so my magnet had to be very strong to detect them.  I wonder what Target would think if you came in with your metal detector and started searching packs.

I have a question that is going to make me look dense, but it wouldn't be the first time! Where does the character on that Campy come from?

Just opened 24 packs of Chrome : 12 Retail With Clear Fronts; 12 from Value Packs. The clear front packs were not fanned. No fingernail or other impressions and the cards were not pushed up in the packs. Got a few cards needed to help complete sets. No adrenaline cards. After hitting an Altered Art (1:1500 packs) in my last purchase; I figure it will be a while before any pack yields something really special.  ;)

That's where i have found mine.

In hindsight I like to be a completest; at least the base set and one example of any subsets and parallels, so I did need one, but no sketch cards, Mixed Up Characters, Altered Artwork or Superfractors ....  :'(

Now to resort the and assemble and sell....... Gotta Love Them Wackies!

The 75th seems OK, there are some jems in there but most is just run of the mill. I do like that I made 1 complete base set with the box. I also got the two autos I really wanted Roger Moore (probably the most valuable sig -Sylvester Stallone) & Joyce Dewitt (though I have a couple sigs from her) I also got Ed Gale(who?). I got a NSYNC BUYBACK!!!!! You're jealous aren't ya... haha I also got a Brady Bunch speckle (1:75)

I got 24 of the reflectives (100 for a set) think I might work on that one...maybe buy another box?

I like seeing all the older sets, some I have and some I need to complete

Funny, I pulled two sketches, but no plates, autos, altered art/mixed up cards, or superfractors.  One of the sketches I actually got from a loose pack from Target - I either beat the pack searchers that day, or they didn't like sketches!

Crickets will be chirping... picked up 60 Chrome Value Packs

Best of luck when you crack 180 packs of chrome. When you share your scores please advise if the hard card was found in the third position in the stack?

I keep a list of the card #'s for the Altered Art and Mixed up cards. When I hit a card in the third position which is # 5, 13, 15, 20, 44, 51, 54, 56 or 83: I have a little anticipation prior to turning it over- hoping for the alternate version card. It has happened once so far with a Campy.  I hope that happens to you this time around.

Your post motivated me to buy some value packs. 9 arrive on Tues and 24 on Thurs.   That's 99 packs of Chrome. Time WILL tell.

Regards,  Andrew

I have noticed the card #3 is the "sweet spot"... I generally open my packs from the bottom, flip them over so I see the the top card and sleeve them & separate them into piles depending on what they are base, refractor, etc... I never touch the cards unless they have some smudges in which case I have a pair of cotton inspection gloves which I gently rub the remove. I have noticed quite a few cards which are complete defects meaning there are lines in the chrome especially with some refractors.

When you get a sketch it's pretty obvious the cards barely fit into the pack.

I keep a spreadsheet of my Chrome (up to date):
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B410p6_RYu0XV2tSeXNpNF93c2s

As you can see I have ton's of Chrome...

I have purchased a few hundred Chrome packs and have moved to an opening schedule of one pack per day. This way I can enjoy four cool chrome cards per day and reflect on the titles I grew up with as well as the other inserts in the set (Wacky Ads, Cutting Room Floor, Where are they now). I found that when I recently cracked 50 or so packs at one time it became less fun. I will report if or when I hit something special out of a pack. If that never happens that's ok with me. Now its about the legacy of the images plus the small chance to score a Altered Art/ Mixed Up Character or Superfractor card.

Today's Chrome pack produced a Hurtz Refractor. I needed that one so it went right into the binder. I am happy it went into the binder because that image with the dead bleeding canary is one of my least favorite from this Chrome set. I find it somewhat disturbing: so I am glad it won't sit on my desk all day the way the other cards from the pack will.

Here are pics of my:

Four card Chrome Daily Pack Display Area,
Chrome Drawer which the Daily Pack comes from,
Chrome Display with 5 Mixed Up/ Alt Art Cards, SuperFractor,  Sketch, Blue and Gold Refractors and one common refractor which changes often.
I will use the common refractor spot for another Super Fractor or Alt Art/ Mixed Card if one ever emerges from a daily pack.

So after about two weeks of the pack a day habit I can report its working out nicely. I really enjoy the four images per day. The refractors are pretty cool and days will go by without pulling one.  Then when one surfaces it look great. Today I pulled a  Log Cave-in refractor. I have fond memories of the card from my youth. Along with it was a Koduck Where are they now card which is a nice update of a classic image. The regular cards were Fright Guard and Neveready which are both iconic cards.
The Wacky Ads and, Lost Wackies and Cutting Room Floor cards keep things interesting.

Today's pack was a good one!  Mixed-Up Character Gadzooka. I already own this one. Hoping to trade it for an Altered Art/ Mixed-Up Character card I need.
FYI, This card was the third card from the top in the four card stack. Pack had a Ditch Masters refractor in the fourth card position.
Not sure what pack configuration the pack came from; as I have purchased Blaster Boxes, Value Packs and loose packs to fill my "Pack A Day" drawer.

What luck! That's a great pull! A

I strongly suspect this sentence has never before been uttered in the history of mankind.

I don't, either. My recollection [and we know how good THAT is] is that I pulled one of the first plates ever found and that was one from Flashback 2 in 2008. Anybody have one from a release prior to that?

Sorry,  The plate was from 2014 ANS1, Not ANS1.   My bad....

That is my recollection as well - I pulled two black plates (Mustard Charge and Tipsy Roll) from Flashback 2.

What are you going to do with all that swill?

What are you going to do with all that swill?

I currently have a ping pong table that is not used so it serves as a sorting area for base sets. I have taken to handing out base sets to my neighbors kids. My Mom
lives in an assisted living home so her co-inhabitants will be receiving sets as well. Halloween is coming too so that is another avenue for swill distribution. Hopefully these efforts will make some kids and adults happy. Any other ideas would be appreciated. I have another 350 packs to open. Most are from value packs which contain 4 Bonus base cards so those base cards are multiplying.   8)

Still have packs for the pack a day habit. That resumes today. Yesterday opened 180 packs. Scored a Nertz Regular Refractor which was the last one I needed to complete the regular refractor base set. WOO  HOO!

Congrats!  If I had known you needed the Nertz I would have sent it to you, but I'm sure it was a lot more fun pulling it from a pack!!!   :great:

Due to stress factors I have experienced this week ; I ended up opening ALL my chrome packs. The last batch of 200 packs yielded a cool Camera Cracked Animals Sketch. When things get tough in my life I turn to Wackies for stress relief instead of other more traditional avenues. So out of 1000 or so packs I did manage to pull two altered art/ mixed up character short print cards (Gadzooka and Campy) I very happy about that as I feel I beat the odds which are 1:1500 packs. Those two titles are my favorites of the 9 card set. Still looking for Ajerx and Quacker Oats Mixed-Up Character cards if anyone wants to work a deal for cash or trade.
I don't think I will be buying more Chrome packs anytime soon. I think I have enough chrome cards to deal with now and look forward to using them to spread the  wacky message.

I also find Wackys a nice distraction from stress.  Unfortunately, at a certain point there aren't enough hours in the day to deal with the stressors and still play with Wackys.

With all my extras I package them up in bundles of ten, and give them to kids at shows and flea markets, to get them interested in the hobby.  After you make all the sets that can be made, I would take the leftovers from you, I would even pay the shipping.

I will find local homes for all of these cards in due time. I may wallpaper my den with chrome cards.
