Title: Hello everyone
Post by: Scheres on March 12, 2016, 07:10:20 PM
I don't usually do these forum things but this looks like a fun place. I did some sketch cards for the new MLB set and the Last GPK Apple pie series.

"kodus" is how Koduck spells kudos                  ;)

I was in another forum years ago where someone misspelled idiot as idoit.  It caught on and everyone started using it.  Ever since, I call those drivers who insist on driving exactly the speed limit in the left-hand lane of the interstate "id-oyts," or maybe it should really be pronounced "id-oh-its."

Thanks! Its always cool to see this many sketch cards together. From what I have seen, there are at least 3 three different sketch card types. I have seen the regular sketch cards, the ones with the laces printed on them and it looks like there are some with a kind of wood looking background. Were there others? I am also guessing, based on the sketches I am seeing on eBay, that the artists were asked  to stay very close to some "model" picture for each title since there is very little variation across same titles.

Neil did model templates for the other artists, and posted some in a different thread.  Sounded like dealing with approvals by both Topps and MLB was quite the challenge!

I bet it was quite a process to get these titles approved by both parties. I image those meetings were interesting.  It would be cool to see some of the discarded ideas  for this set.

Yes, the woodgrain and the baseball red lace background sketch cards were produced in lower numbers. I think the red lace cards are only in the jumbo packs. We were given templates done by Neil Camera and instructed to follow as closely as possible. It was a challenge, and a learning experience for me. If I had to redo them now I know I could make them better.

As far as I know all my cards were approved. I've only seen 2 show up on ebay so far. I did have to redo 2 of my return cards, one they said the logo looked rough and the other I forgot to add a small detail.

Chad, your sketches are a blast and it was a challenge for all of us to follow the templates!  Not sure there's a right way to do it but I know there's no easy way.  I spent way more time on this set than on past sketch sets.

Yes the set-up for these sketch cards where all pre-chosen by Topps and MLB unfortunally, too bad we had to draw all the logo's by hand (very time consuming!) But I think it raised the level of sketch cards in some way IMO. cause not everybody would have done them as they came out now. Those templates by Neil where pretty awesome to do!

As for variety in sketch card stock here is a flyer that tells what-where-to-find  :P

Me too, I spent a lot of time on these. Good thing I like doing these cause as you know it doesn't pay. The sketches don't seem to be selling well, They were all listed very high last week, most are being relisted for 99 cent starting bids.

What has kept me interested in the sketch cards has been the variety, and the different creative takes on a title by the multiple artists.  If they all have to do the same "approved" sketch, where's the fun?   Wackys parody a product, and I can't see how letting the brand owner decide what can be done is in that spirit.

I agree, I am glad to finally be invited to work on a Wacky set, but yes the repetition was a bit of a downer. And Judging by the sales of the sketchcards on ebay the collectors aren't to thrilled either. I wonder if there will be a series 2 MLB?? I hope to be asked back for more. I'd love to do some of the classics!

I think Topps missed the boat on this one.  The parody doesn't really appeal to the baseball card collector, and the fact that these aren't actual products doesn't really appeal to the Wacky Packages Collector.

Nice job on the sketches, by the way!

Since you don't know if they're approved or not, is seeing them on eBay the only real way to know that they were produced?  If so, that must be an elation/downer for you.  An elation that it was selected and cool to see it in print, but also a downer that the person who got it was willing to put it up on eBay rather than keep it.  I know that a lot of collectors buy cases, open them up, keep one set, and sell the rest to pay for what they keep.  If they love sketches, they'll keep 'em, and if their goal is to make a profit, then it's off to eBay with 'em.

Hope you get more work on Wackys.

Thanks, I think all my cards were approved since i got paid. They are just still sitting in packs somewhere or in someones collection that doesn't post on facebook or ebay.

Hope you get more work on Wackys.
