Title: Joe G.
Post by: Joe G. on October 02, 2013, 09:53:03 PM
I noticed a number of my sketch cards have started to show up on eBay so I thought it would be cool for me to post these here.  For ANS 11 I was able to draw cards of the 8 gags I contributed to the series.  These cards are based on my original roughs.  It was a fun series to work on and having my gags painted by Brent Engstrom, Matthew Kirscht and Pat Chaimuang was a real thrill.

Sam, thanks so much for the kudos.  Your paintings for the series, Spray Poupon and Crotch Bite are wonderful!  Can't wait to see what you have in store for the Halloween postcards!

Alex, thanks, so glad you dug the gags.  Those are the first two I got accepted into the series.  Both had some tweaking from my original submission.  I originally based Mobster High on a bigger box set and on the Lagoona Blue character.  Topps wanted it more general and based on a long box set.  For My Little Bony my original gag was just a brittle pony skeleton and Topps wanted some references to a zombie pony.  Here take a look and see the tweaks.

It really sucks too. There is so much they could do and avoid the shit jokes. I know they are aiming these for 6-12 year olds but this is crazy. I'm trying to think of any original series titles that dealt with poo. I can't think of any off the top. Yes, we had booze and tobacco....aw the good old days....

You can't make fun of overweight people anymore as well.  No more Bigtumi, My T-Fink, Fatina or Pounds stickers.  Bring back the alcohol and tobacco stickers !

Well since the subject has turned to scatalogical humor let me post this.  This was my original submission for the gag currently known as Sno-Craps.  See if you like it.

I'm still determined to get a monocle and top hat into one my gags.

As I mentioned in the ANS 11 Spoilers thread I like to group my sketches in threes.  So If you collect them, they fit nicely on one line of a 9 pocket page.  Here are the only monochrome sketches I did for the series.  Together they comprise the Frankenstein set.

Neil, thanks so much for the feedback.  For ANS 11 I did three subsets.  One (staring contest) was included in the ANS 11 spoilers thread and the third is advertising ghosts based on the Gloo Berry sketch I did for the PC 9 regular edition sets.  Here's a pic:

In addition to Wacky Packages, I was fortunate to recently do a little work for Mike and Neil on the new Ugly Santa AOD cards.  In case people didn't know, the Topps Vault is getting together an eclectic and wonderful group of artists to work on these.  It includes many Wacky favorites and artists new to Topps.  If you haven't already, please check em out at the...

I wanted to put in a plug for the most recent set of AOD sketches.  For January 2014 we have Hollywood Zombies.  Its the great of stage and screen as Zombies.  Currently on eBay there are a number for sale.  These include work by our very own Jason Brower and Dustin Graham as well as Chris Mason and Chad Scheres.  Please check 'em out and support our artists.

Just to wet your appetite here's one I did that I call "BRAINS" KARLOFF.

As a sketch artists the blank return cards can pile up if you don't do them immediately.  Yesterday I decided to paint one up from way back in ANS 11.  It's electric slave shaving arise.  Robots and Zombies what could be better?

Neil thanks for the kudos.  Paul and Alex, yes, the second is the Maltese Falcon and Prowl doesn't seem to happy about it.  Perhaps he doesn't know it's secret.  The third is what Mike Jasperson called the million dollar painting, the coveted Band Ache art.  Perhaps the only Saunders piece still in the Topps vault.  The 8th is a bit obscure but it's the map from King Kong showing the location of Skull Island.  I had done a couple more that Topps pulled due to copyright.  I did Colonel Sanders Secret Recipe, the Death Star Plans, Action Comics 1 and Mad Number 11 with the great Wolverton's cover.

So as I mentioned in an earlier post, I had a bunch of Old School 5 sketches I had to redo, some for copy-write and some because I changed the name of the original gag.  When I first did King O' Scare I thought I'd combine two of my favorite things from childhood, Monsters and drawing Mustaches on pictures from newspapers or magazines.  Topps told me these had all been pulled so I've kept the originals under wraps.  Well I just saw that an eBay auction had one listed, so I guess some made it through.  Since that's the case, I figure there's no harm in showing the set.

Marc it was one of Matt Stock's 4 card Olds 5 auctions.  I think it just ended.  Here's the link.  If you look at the sketch in the lower left corner you will see Count O' Scare:

Thanks Joe, I would not have noticed that.  If any of the others were put into packs, at least one would probably have showed up by now, but on the other hand the sketch distribution in OLDS5 was so bad and non-randomized (i.e. they did a terrible job of mixing up the sketches) that it would not surprise me if someday the others started showing up in bunches.

gave me a 'best guess', which was exactly right.
I'm off to read LRB's wiki page ...

Patrick, LRB is correct!  The voice of the Beat Generation and inspiration for George Harrison's Cracker Box Palace, Lord Richard Buckley!  Just PM me your choice and it will be in the mail tomorrow.  For anyone who doesn't know Lord Buckley, look him up, he's a gem from the 1950s that help mold the 1960s!

Love this mashup!

As a sketch artists the blank return cards can pile up if you don't do them immediately.  Yesterday I decided to paint one up from way back in ANS 11.  It's electric slave shaving arise.  Robots and Zombies what could be better?

Elizabeth, thanks so much for the kind words!  I really do try to find a unique approach when designing sketches.  In terms of the O' Scares I'll let you in on a little secret.  Before I found out that they had been pulled, I had painted up one as a return and that one I got to keep.

All right, here's my monthly post to try to keep this thread alive. As I had posted earlier, I always find an approach to unify my groups of sketches. For Olds 5 there were two sets in which I placed the character into gags from the series they came from. One was Bug Wally and the other Hippy Trash Bags. Here's the set.  See if you can guess the gags which each is based on!

Well, it looks like the floodgates have opened for Wacky Packages 50th sketches so here's a few of mine.  I decided to do something a little different this time around and only sketch gags which I originally came up with.  Kinda like the K-Tel thing with original Wacky Sketches by the original gag artist.  Here's a page of singles with ANS, WP 2014, 2015 and a WP 50th gag stuck in for good measure.

Jim, checked in with Topps and here's the scoop:

4-card puzzles are only in the Value Boxes.
Panoramics are only in the fat pack.
Shaped and Dual Artist are only in the Collector Edition.
Standard is in retail and hobby display box, but not in CE.

Same as the last few GPK sets.

What exactly are "Value Boxes"?  When I search the web, all I see are Hobby Boxes and Collector Hobby Boxes.  Is there someplace to pre-order "Value Boxes", and if so, is that what they are called on that site?

I believe that Blaster boxes is a term started and used with gaming cards like Yu-gi-oh, etc., for boxes that contained a chunk of cards to fatten your gaming stack.
The multi-pack boxes for sport and non-sport cards were always Value boxes.
But somewhere in the last few years, blaster has taken over as the name a lot of people and stores use for all of them. (Topps still calls them correctly)
To me, it's totally wrong to use blaster, but it is what it is.

I think the Panoramics are four panels that run horizontally. Check out some of Chundez's (Vincenso's) in the 50th Anniversary sketch thread. I don't know is these are one long card with three folds or four cards that form a horizontal puzzle, but I am guessing it's the multifolded one card.

The Panoramic sketches are the foldout books 5x3,5" .... The Dual Artist sketches are the same, only difference is that TWO artists has drawn on them (how cool!)

The Loaded sketches also known as Puzzles sketches are 4 cards combined in either a row, portrait or landscape. 4-Panel Sketch

I hope this helps!  :P

Oh yeah! I think that is very nice, actually IMO that is what they should do, let the gag-creator make sketch cards only with his/her new gag and put a gold logo on it and make the hit odds of this gold sketch smaller so the value is higher towards all other sketch cards? Kudo's well earned... btw I still have your return proud on display here!  8)

OK, so as part of the Holiday Treat from years past we had incorporated little Holiday gifts in the form of custom toys.  In 2015 it was a Bego building set and the following year was a My Little Bony figure.  2017/2018 was the year I did Gross Card Con and also the year my son started his own custom toy business.  Well that year the toys were kinda fancy and we sold them at GCC.  This year my son Josh (on instagram his toy line is @joshuastoybox, please follow his exploits if your on IG) cast up some mini football games for Paul Harris.  Paul then detailed them as a Furball Toys. We made about 20 and they were given out as a thank you to the artists who gave their time and talents to make the Holiday Treat mega postcard set a reality.  So I thought it would be fun to do a group pic of all these Holiday Toys!

Patrick, great idea!  Cool way to keep the toy safe and sound.  I assume you also have the instruction card in the same box.  When I sent the sets out Dave Gross told me his kids loved it and wanted to build a shanty from spare Lego pieces to go with it.  I wonder if he ever got around to doing it.

yep, the instructions card is under the black foam piece, so it's viewable from the backside of the case, but not viewable in the photo.
