I think this explains the sketches of a bird on fire that have turned up recently on PC7 card stock that didn't match a Wacky title.

Nice stuff Matthew!
Who the heck is Ron Comes?

I thought the LE sets would only be sketches of PC9 characters. I already have sketches of the other characters. I'm glad I didn't go crazy over these.

Awesome sketches Matt!!
Thanks for posting them ;)

Thanks guys!

I'm with Brad on this one. Thus far I've enjoyed attempting to get one sketch for each postcard character within each release set (which I put together on the same page in my binders). But from what I can tell from the postings, both the sticker sketches and the regular LE cardstock sketches could be of any character from any set. Now it will be that much harder to get sketch pulls that correspond to Series 9, and what do you do with a series 9 sketch that is of a series 5 character? Put it in binder with the set the character came from, or float in the series 9 set like an orphan? I know I'm being more anal about this than most collectors, but I do wish that the sketch subject matter would align to the characters of the set they were released with. Without that, the sketches seem even less like they're actually part of any particular release.
-
Guys, I just opened my sets and pulled a postcard-sized sketch card from one. Anyone know the story on these? Has anyone else found a super-sized sketch?

Well said. I think this hurt the series. If Topps or the artists need ideas they should poll the forum. I doubt that will happen but its a thought.

I appreciate your comments. Good, bad or ugly, I personally like to hear what forum members enjoy (or don't) about the postcard sets. It helps to make future sets better...

Wow, that giant sketch card is great! But I gotta say, if I get another "Romaine" sketch with the series 9 sets I bought, I'm gonna be pissed. I pulled TWO of those things out of my three sealed sets that featured that character, and they have ZERO value on the market.

And I appreciate the fact that you are always on the forum, listening patiently to our comments, and keeping us informed about new releases. It is really nice knowing that we have at least some influence on how the Wacky sets are being developed!

That is amazing! I wonder how many were done? I can't imagine too many. Very nice pull!

It appears that the LE sketches were done with a lot more attention to detail as compared with the standard sticker sketches. Even though the price is $13.00 more for the limited edition postcards, it seems to me that the limited edition postcards are the better option. I believe the value to be worth it even more after seeing the 5x7 sketches. I would love to see a color 5x7 sketch and frame it. I have said all along that I don't mind paying for quality and originality. The sketches so far seem to be of an extremely high quality as compared to past postcards as well as the old school series. Albeit, I have only seen a few sketches and the artist return sketches at this time. I also like the fact that they are not doing the comic strips sketches. The comic strip sketches are great but you really need the whole series to truly appreciate the sketches. I have not received my postcards yet but I wanted to know forum member's opinions so far.

I haven't gotten mine in yet either but so far I like most of them except for the repeat titles that I already have. I want characters from PC9 so hopefully my wish will come true.

Nice stuff Matthew!
Who the heck is Ron Comes?
Those Kirscht ones Kill! Great colors.
Ron Comes is an artist friend and classic WP lover brought in to help with sketch cards. Hooked me up with my first Wacky Packages uncut card sheet poster back in the day during our storyboard illustration office job.
The Smokin' Joe/ Engstrom oversized sketch combo has great ink work going on. They did a great job. Love it.
Here's a spoiler from 1 of 2 different oversized combo sketches from me and Brent.

Since Rob asked the question and Neil is showing sub-sets, I will officially confirm that Yes, I did sketches for the set and here is my tobacco sub-set.
Joe G.
ps. If you like em, you should be able to collect em' all as I did a bunch of each.

My package just arrived. I opened the RE first and was very impressed with the sketches. They are all really nice even thought I have other variations of the same sketch but the Smokin' Joe Newts is creative. I also love how Camera used the can on Puffer.
Now I'm very unpleased with my LE sketches. I like the Simko but 2 of the same Engstrom sketches? WTH!
I was able to get all 6 bio cards so that was a huge plus.
With all these great color and 5X7's why are we getting duplicate sketches?

Your RE sketches blow the LE ones away! I got the same Engstrom sketch, & ratchet007 has the same Engstrom sketch on ebay right now. That's 4 this early on that are almost identical. :-[ My Camera & Smokin' Joe sketches were head & shoulders above the Engstrom. :great: I wouldn't be happy if I got not 1 but 2 average & identical sketches. :'(

I'll add you to the list! Is "Grossberg" the correct spelling?
-
Rob, Joe Grossberg is correct but not being blessed with a nice compact name like, Jay Lynch or Joe Simko, I like to go by Joe G.
-
Let's not forget that each artist draws a ton of sketches, sometimes hundreds, per series.
To expect them to draw each one completely different is unrealistic.
I remember one series Mark Parisi drew each sketch with a different character, which went way above and beyond.

-
Brad, no I just figured Gloomy Bears to be a smoker. Sure in Neil's painting he's not holding a cigarette but I bet he had one sitting in an ashtray near by. I mean just look at that face, he's got a pack a day habit easy. ;)

Just remember, your line is "No bears were injured in the creation of these sketch cards."

Pat, you're right. Anyway Gloomy's doing fine, he's been around since PC3 and still has a strong fan following.

Received my 3 LE sets and 1 Bird set today (Indiana). Here are my sketch pulls:
(http://s11.postimg.org/tz13hjunj/abcd.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/tz13hjunj/)
1 color and 1 B&W Kirscht, and one of the apparently obligatory Engstrom CORN FLAMES sketches. The shaped sketch sticker is by Brower.
I received 2 each of the artist bios with SNITCHERS and CORN FLAMES so would be interested in trading for HOWLS and ALL BRANCH.

Can I see a show of hands that didn't get an Engstrom chicken? LOL I think Brent may have overdone it with the chicken.

Sorry if this appears twice... Here are my sketches. Funny thing, I've been wanting a Smokin' Joe Dr. Puffer, and what do you know!

I just looked at eBay and there are 23 sketches and 5 are Engstrom chickens. What's the deal? Brent, you need to chime in. Did you only do chickens? Are you sticking it to the man? LOL
-
With the sketch cards for the LE sets we had to draw only from the cards we painted. Hence Brent's chicken, and my repeated Beast.
Here's few returns available.

Seriously? Why are people showing other characters by different artists with their sketch posts?
I broke down and bought some more LE sets that will be here today and I better not get 9 chickens...LOL

This limitation and oddness of what characters the artist's could sketch are part of what is making me unsure of whether or not I will keep the LE sets when I receive them. I still remember the Tooth cards...
When I bought them I was looking at the excellent list of artists and purchased quickly, but for $53.99 $52.99 a pop I am feeling more and more like it is a lottery/gamble to get one of these great cards and I'm not sure I want to be disappointed another time...
Joe, your work is superb btw. :great:

Hey guys... I decided to list two of my sketch card pulls on eBay, including the Brent Engstrom/Smokin Joe artist's jam supersize sketch card I was lucky enough to get. I set a pretty high BIN price for that one (at least I think that's high - I can never predict what these will go for, so I just sort of wing it when I list).
Here is a shot of the two sketches I listed, in scale next to each other. They are listed separately, however.

You didn't add make an offer so you must think it will go that high. I just put in a bid so good luck!
Not at all... if I thought it would go that high. as you assume I must think it will, I would only list the BIN and wouldn't have any other alternative.
I rarely sell things and when I do, I don't ever list with make an offer.
I just always list with a lower starting price and typically with what I consider would be a best-case (for me, anyway) BIN. I've had all manner of conclusions with this approach.. sometimes people grab the BIN, sometimes people put in a starting bid and it goes for that one bid, and sometimes people opt to bid and the thing sells for more than my best-case BIN price (happened once or twice - I was shocked both times - revealing how little I understand about sketch pricing).
I guess now that you point out a make-me-an-offer option, that might be a good idea for next time.
Maybe my approach isn't the best, but to be clear, my lack of including an offer option certainly doesn't indicate what I think it will sell for. I tend to wing it.
On the other hand, I DO think it'll at least sell for my lower starting bid, which is why I include THAT in addition to the BIN. And on this pair of listings, after ten minutes, I am 50% right so far.
I guess my logic such as it is, is that I'm willing to put out what I feel is a higher-end guestimate top price if someone really wants to guarantee the win (my BIN) but beyond that, I am looking to sell and I don't mind letting the open market determine the best offer for the piece, even if that's significantly lower than that best case BIN.
Oh and thanks for the bid. That was quick!

I'm just messing with you. I put in a bid but it may not hold. People have to realize the older sketch prices are a thing of the past. It's actually comical when there is a big BIN because those days are over. The big collectors have run out of cash.

The big collectors have run out cash? Sounds kind of like a bummer and not very comical at all. Bad news for the hobby, I'd assume (though maybe good for it, long-term).
Well, obviously I hope you're wrong in the short-term.. Clearly, I hope I do well with these auctions. Comical BIN prices and cash-strapped big collectors notwithstanding. Also it's clear that while i want everyone to bid on my listings, you'd rather no one else bids against you. If your prediction holds, the card is yours. :-)

For it was not to be.

Got my three packs today and decided to be a sport and open them. Sigh. Two corn flames (Brent: I loved your Groundhog's Day work, but $52.99 each for two of these is pretty frustrating...).
I pulled a David Gross "Gloomy Bears" that will be going up on eBay tomorrow night unless someone wants it first. If you do, send me a PM with your best offer:
[expando]http://www.orderofhpak.com/Wackys/WackyPC9_DavidGrossGloomyBears.jpg[/expando]
I did manage to pull all 6 bio cards, so that was something. But I have to say I will probably just be doing the Halloween PC's from here on out.
P.S. Postimage seems to be having problems. Loading super slow. Also I think people need to use the "expando" tag so we see thumbnails here or use thumbnails for links or something. Have a feeling it is the larger size photos (from iPhones for example) plus Postimage running slowly.

Makes me really afraid to open my limited postcards.....not here yet, expected tomorrow. And don't believe the wacky website - showed delivery received 2 days after my purchase so I panicked alittle as it didn't get to me by then - found out the delivery was from NY to N Jersey!!! Then was shipped off to California....

here's mine that I got today. Really loving all the RE stickers, lots of detail, use of shape, shading, etc.. Debating whether to try and trade the cool Croc for another nice Ruffs, or maybe a Ruffs to get more variety.
and while I too got a Engstrom chicken - this fowl is red hot! and a keeper.

Surprisingly this is only the first N.C. sketch (p.c) I've gotten since multiple artists starting working on the sketches. Both look good. Now I wonder if the non-limited edition set might be worth a buy.

I've had mine for several days already, but just getting to post now. For what I paid for an LE and RE set, I think I did fine. My pulls:

I think you did really well. Seems like your RE pulls were better than the LE ones. I'm wondering with the LE ones if the artists were just worn out doing the RE sets. I can't bring myself to roll the dice for an RE set after-the-fact though. ;)

I think you did real well based on all the same Engstrom and Simko sketches. It really sucks because of the same sketches. A guy that bought 3 sets shouldn't get the same sketch. Really?

LOL. think how I feel about my binder sketch dupes. Really?

Yeah, the dupe thing has really killed it for me in general, unfortunately. I'm still in for Halloween though!
If this is a result of Topps policy, then they've managed to shoot themselves in the foot on this one...
Pat and I swapped commons (Engstrom Corn Flames for Simko England's Beast).

I like my RE sketches but got a beast and chicken for my LE sketches.

Does the “but” in your statement mean you prefer your RE sketches to your LE sketches?
I expected the RE sketches to be of somewhat lower quality or less detail than the LE sketches, but from what I see so far, the two types seem to be about on par with each other.
When I receive my LE sketch (today?), if I’m not thrilled with it, I’ll fight buyers remorse and will try not to say, “I should have gotten one of those regular sketches!”
-
Jean Nutty my postcards just came in! All the way from NJ to California, took one week!
Got all 6 bio cards and although no 5x7s or colors, got a Camera, Gross and Kirsht - will post these later.
Nothing spectacular but decent - 2 nice RE sketches too, a Camera and a J Graham - have to agree with
others here that the REs are on par with the LE sketches....except for the 5x7s of course...

Yes it does. I like the diversity of the RE sketches. With the LE sketches so many of the Corn Flames & Englands Beast look exactly the same so I must admit I am a little disappointed with the two that I received.

It's so damn confusing when purchasing. I like the RE sketches I got but I'm Leary of ordering more.

Here's mine. I'm happy with them, but would have preferred at least one of the new characters. Guess I'll head to ebay for that...

If anyone wants to help me flip this bird, LMN. I'd like to trade for another PC 9 sketch. I’ll include two bio cards (Simko/Kirscht) if you need ‘em. Might consider including the stamps too.

Ok, ok... it was intended as a 'Maulboro'... but I got so involved in drawing the font that I forgot to spell it correctly (I dropped the 'U' somehow)... so half way through I realized what I did and improvised it into a new word that I thought still fit ('Mal' means 'bad' in French). I think my muse had been drinking that morning.

I don’t think the expando function works with Postimages
(I believe expando only works with images that are uploaded to other websites)

I'm not sure what you mean by deleting the image tag? Do I cover the url address (which is supplied by postimage) and click
the image icon, then click the expand icon?
JeanNutty indicated that it doesn't work with Postimage - I'll see if I can use an address/link from Photobucket perhaps....

An image tag is the coding that is added to both ends of the image link when you highlight the image link and click on the buttons
When you use the image button (http://www.wackypackagesforum.com/Themes/default/images/bbc/img.gif)
Your image link gets these tags attached to both ends of the image link [ img ]
When you use the expando button (http://www.wackypackagesforum.com/Themes/default/images/bbc/expando.gif)

[After looking at Duzn’t post above, he was able to get the expando function to work (somewhat – “mini-expando”) with a Postimage link]

I think you are correct, it’s PRB
It seems that adding the image tags changes the size of the image, for some reason
The original image is large (1280 x 879) but the expando version you posted is tiny - only 180 x 124

Loved playing Lawn Jarts back in the day - except that those hoops always had problems staying together (the end attachment always seemed to crack the loop plastic, etc.).
Wonder if the first iteration was Living Room Jarts and they had to migrate to Lawn Jarts -- seems like a good Mark Parisi cartoon! ;)

By right clicking on the original large Postimage scan, you can copy the web address of the image.
In your case the image links are

So far Neil did the ones known. Must be a very limited character.

Have you seen an example of All Branch? I've seen the combo but I don't know if I've seen one as a stand alone sketch. I've seen too many sketches to keep track though...LOL
-
Yes, I have a stand alone sketch of All Branch.
You can see it in Jean Nutty's posting #142 above - it now expands.

Ahh. There it is. It's also another Camera sketch.

Very, Very pleased with my pulls. I got one of the Bugweisers with Nasfly. I've wanted one of those. I love the Dracky Packages with Scary Lee. Awesome! Overall very pleased. I do wish the colors were different characters but not bad. I also wish the RE had characters from this new series.
Overall I think the RE sets are better than the LE. So far I haven't pulled a bad one. I now wish the sale was still on...LOL

When i did the sketches, i didn't know what was in series 9' not even that one of mine was included, so i did no series 9 drawings

Some, many actually, of the R.E. sketches are nicely done.
What is the reason why we've seen the same sketches from this series and the last (non-halloween)? Artist preference?

Did some trading with Neil Camera and now have a nice Postcard Series 9 ALL-BRANCH/HOWLS Artist-Return combo: :great:

Figured that since I've got my scanner running for the new Halloween postcards I'd share my keepers from PC9.
