Title: Pretty Display Boxes
Post by: Paul_Maul on April 05, 2013, 07:08:47 PM
I was just experimenting with taking pics with my wife's I-Phone and e-mailing them to myself. Man, nothing could be easier, I may just have to get me one....

That is the first time I've seen the cloth stickers box. It's the same size as the Die-cuts box. So they must have come out around the same time. I haven't done much research but this would tell us that Die-cuts came first and cloth second because the first series box is completely different.
Yes, you need to get an iPhone...LOL

Very nice!  As for the iphone, just borrow your wife's phone and put the money you'd save on that into Wackys!   :-\

Ha, that's clearly what I've been doing so far, my current phone is a circa-2004 flip phone without a keypad....

I have a $10 Tracfone, no keypad, no flip cover, just bare bones communication for use in case of emergencies.

No, they're not for sale. It's kinda like when people all post the sketch cards they got, so others can look at them. That's one of the most fun thing about these forums, people sharing their collections with others who might appreciate them. I certainly have no one in my immediate life who would give a ratz' @$$, so this place is my only hope.

Dave,

Those are Wacky Beauty!! I actually have test-series die-cuts that might have come out of that box.."grey-back" blank version type...sheer awesomeness...How much does the die-cut box usually fetch??

I don't think I've seen a high grade die cut box for sale publicly ever, so I have no idea what they would go for now. Historically, I would say the highest grade die cut, cloth, 1st series boxes usually went in the $750-$1000 range, maybe a little more for a high grade wacky ads box.

I paid under $500 for this one a little while back, but it is definitely lower grade than Dave's...

There have been many.  I won one from Mastronet, then flipped it on ebay years later when I decided I didn't need to have a minty mint one that I always had to worry about when I wanted to show it to people so I downgraded.  I have seen a few others over the years.  Perhaps you didn't view them as high grade, minor bump or bruise.

Really? Who is this loser? He sells photos of stuff? Really? We must be dumb cuz there must be a whole market for this stuff.  It's like the guy that sells photo copies of autographs. Why would there be a market for this? I think I might take high quality 8X10's scans and print them for $10 each. Ink is so expensive that no one would ever think to do this. It may be my new business model.
Dave, posting your pictures of boxes and posting them on the forum is totally wrong. Put black borders around your boxes and sell the prints. You are losing a lot of money. Maybe hire a professional photographer to get your lighting right..LOL

Looks like he is selling barely 10% of his photo listings.  Is that really worth the time and cost?  Data Entry clerks get like $15 and hour, seems getting temp jobs to do data entry is more lucrative than this "photo business".

I think these guys are just doing it to put a little extra money in their pocket but isn't this business model just wrong?
Dave should take really nice professional pictures of his boxes and make a hard cover book to sell. You can put together these awesome books through iPhoto or Shutterfly. You could put text and such. It would be cool!

The extra info/history would definitely add to the experience, as well as seeing variations on opposite pages and/or the really rare stuff (that many of us will never see let alone purchase) is sweet.

Such books would be awesome, but would really have to be a hobby effort (like the Gallery). I've always liked stuff in nice condition, but as a result I'm never able to approach completeness with things like boxes. I never even bothered trying to pursue color variations, for example, which are pretty much non-existent in the kind of condition I'd be happy with.

I believe with software like iPhoto you can order one book at a time. I don't believe there is a discount for volume so you can create the book first and then take orders if anyone else would like one. It would be a cool thing to try. You don't have to be a perfectionist and have every variation.

...as soon as a new variation is found, then such books are deemed obsolete, incomplete and frustrating to own.  Even as recently as last year, another UK display box was discovered that Brian won from Roxanne auction.

I understand the frustrating aspect.  But, no matter what new stuff is found, I still value the Gallery, and I can make notes in it as needed to reflect errors and new finds.  Perhaps a running compilation of new finds since the Gallery would be useful?  And of course, the threads with all of Dave's awesome boxes and packs are available for viewing and printing (and drooling).

Back in the 90's when the Wrapper was more heavily relied on for Wacky transactions, correspondence, etc., there was a guy named Bob Marks who was a display box specialist.  He had all kinds of uncommon 60's and 70's boxes, stuff in the $250 to $500 class, and wrote a few Wrapper articles about them too.  Anyway, he was in the practice of selling photos on ebay at the time, which I always thought was silly, knowing you could just print stuff off the internet if all you wanted was a decent image.  I guess it must have been worth his while though, because he did it for some time.

I don't know how the Wrapper does it now. I would have thought the internet would have killed it but it I think it still has a faithful following. I subscribed for a year but since my main focus is on Wacky's I didn't get much out of it.

I used to deal with a lot of people through The Wrapper.  I still enjoy the articles, and have also found some older cards I was looking for where it is apparently not worth the effort for dealers to list singles on evilbay.  I hope The Wrapper continues for a long time!

I too dealt with many people through the Wrapper and was a subscriber of it for many yrs and when the Wacky's started drying up in the magazine and everybody was joining the forum to acquire them, That is when I had to stop the subscription and become a member myself, I have met the Wrapper editor and I wish him continued success.

There's still quite a business of selling magnets (just photos that stick) on eBay.  I know, as many of my Flickr images have been co-opted and turned into magnets for these jokers to sell over the years.  Magnet sellers leave a bad taste in my mouth..and they jam up my eBay searches for certain things.

I think the thing is, some folks are willing to spend $15 to recapture a snippet of their youth but not anymore than that.

I know it will take away from the integrity of the scan but you may need to add a watermark.

I have always been aware I could watermark the images in my archive.  Even before I started.

Watermarking might solve the problem, but so would removing my archive.

But both options take away from the intent and spirit with which I created it.  I've endeavored to remain clear to that, in spite of those who would co-opt my work for their own pathetic profits.

I wonder why the sticker on almost all 8th series display boxes looks greasy/transparent like this? Something about the sticker stock I guess.....

Hey Dave - I finally found a couple of them that do not have the 'greasy' sticker look... they do exist.  I will post a pic of mine when I return back home next week. As a matter-of-fact I will have to check my extras, and may have one that looks better than the one you posted.  If so, I will make it available to you if you you want it.

Sorry it took so long, but I store my boxes inside Wacky cases in the top of my son's closet :o0

Brian -

The interesting part here is that both of your non-smeared ones have the sticker on the front panel of the box, whereas all the smeared ones have the sticker on the top of the box. I guess the 8th series was when they made the switch from top sticker to front sticker, as all 9ths and up seem to be front sticker.

I assume the sticker code is the same in all these cases. Any speculation as to why it's smeared only when on the top of the box???

Yeah, and I have wondered about that too... but I have some boxes with mixed front and top stickers that blow theory out of the water.  Personally, I think that there was a bad roll of stickers that got damaged 'somehow' with the printing process or in storage, that affected the 8th Series roll prior to them being applied in production.

What do you think?

What do you mean "mixed front and top stickers"? I have never seen a 7th or earlier box with front sticker, or a 9th or later box with top sticker...have you?

Do you just mean you've seen 8th top sticker boxes that are un-smeared, and/or 8th front sticker boxes that are smeared?

I wonder if there is a correlation to 8th blue packs/orange packs with front/top stickers...

Even though it doesn't specifically state the series, doesn't the 2nd series box meet this criteria? According to Greg's page (http://www.wackypacks.com/boxes/3rd_1973.html), the 3rd purple did, also, unless this is doctored.

Specifically on the 8ths though...are you saying you've seen non-smeared ones with the sticker on top? Are both of the boxes in your pic from the same source? Because they look very similar.

In regards to the (2) Series 8 boxes, they were from completely different sources...  I always create an internal box and wrap them all the same for perservation purposes.  I believe that I may own a lower grade Series 8 box with the sticker on top 'non-smeared', but has writing on the front or side of the box.. will look in my extras.

I wonder if there is a correlation to 8th blue packs/orange packs with front/top stickers...

The 8th blue full box (whose price just keeps rising, LOL) on ebay has sticker on top....

Yeah, I exhausted the ones I had already photographed. Now I just need to find a few minutes where my wife isn't playing "Jewelmania" to snap the rest  ;D

You're right, the other ones I took with the flash came out a lot better. Feel free to fix up any others I post if you care to!

That's the only one I don't have! I've had the chance at a dozen of them, but never one that is nice enough, and I'm never willing to dilute quality in favor of completeness!

...and for anyone who likes baseball cards...

Great pics!  As much as I like the Wacky ones, I really like the baseball card one.  With the various packs, including rack and cello that show some of the cards themselves, these really lend themselves to such a cool pic.  I know it's a Wacky forum, but if you have one of the '78 baseball "set", I'd love to see it.

I don't have a 1978 one ready, but here's a 1971 group courtesy of grote15 of the Collector's Universe forum (with a box from me):

Can anyone tell me who the 4 players are on the '71 box? I think I know 3 of the 4 but the last one eludes me.

Bench, Gibson, Boog Powell and Carl Yaz.

Great pics, brings back lots of memories - especially Bill Freehan peaking through 33 card pack in the '71 pic. He was one of my younger brother's favorite players. In fact, my brother liked him so much that he would eat any Bill Freehan card he could get his grubby fingers on thinking he could become more like his idol. I do believe a couple of my '71 cards have a chewed corner - rescued, no doubt, from a worse fate (Boog Powell among them).

I love the fact that baseball display boxes of this era are cheap compared to wacky display boxes! I think I paid $125 for the '71 box which is by far the toughest of the era. I got high grade '70 and '72 boxes for like $30 apiece.
