Title: Wacky Packages posters - series 1 (spoilers)
Post by: crackedjerk on August 14, 2012, 01:42:05 PM
Just found this announcement from Non-Sport Update on Facebook:

http://www.nsu-magazine.com/new-product-announcement-wacky-packages-posters-series-1/

While it sounds promising, I'm concerned about two things.  First, will it be possible to get all three promo cards?  I hope so (that is, without spending tons of money).  Second, which titles will be produced.  I'd prefer either Original Series titles (which I doubt it will be) or some of the "better" ANS titles.  Of course, "better" is a relative term, but I don't think Topps does a great job, in my opinion, of the ANS titles it has chosen for things like luggage tags or cereal boxes from ANS9 (really, Topps, no Count Funkula?  Are you kidding me?).  Still, it's fun to have some new Wackys to look forward to.  I'm just going to take a little more cautious approach until I learn more.

Are the posters an exclusive from ShopTopps.com rather than being sold in stores like Target and Walmart?

Will the Wacky Packages posters replace the Wacky Packages postcard series?

And is this to tie us over until ShopTopps gets Wacky Packages Old School Series 4 by the time the Fall season comes?

It looks like the fine print says "One promo card included free with every box purchase". Sounds pricey.

Yes. No. I guess if you want to look at it that way.

Good catch, glad to have the early word on these.  Not sure if they will be a hit but I know most on the forum will go after the three promos.  Glad they made it only three, if there was a unique promo with each of the 24 posters that would be hard to complete!

I agree. Topps sucks at picking titles for inserts. I'm going to wait to see a checklist before I even consider buying any of these.

Well at least it looks like they are going to include Cannibals which IMO is the best ANS title ever!

agree as well - although the two ANS titles shown are 2 of my favorites, which is a good start. But what are the other 19?

Aren't there 3 ANS titles showing? So wouldn't that make "other 21"?

Doncha mean other 22, rocket scientist?   LOL
24(total posters) - 3 (new titles) - 2 (reprints shown in ad) = 19 remaining reprints

that third title in the ad is new, right?

I think, but now I'm not sure, the wording is kind of ambiguous to me...guess we'll just see what we get in 2 weeks.

They need to include all three promo cards with a three box order. If it is random I will not be pleased.

Oh just admit you were blindsided by Patrick's superb logic ;)

Also, considering the following:

- 3 never before published titles will be included
- 3 exclusive promo cards will be issued

what are the odds the 3 promo cards will be the 3 new titles  :-\

And like the original 1974 Wacky Packages Posters, will they be more detailed/larger artwork than their sticker counterparts?

Nope. Same artwork, just larger.
These posters are wider than the old ones, which means the original art will fill up the poster area just right.  New, taller art isn't needed.

I'm with you. Says these  Posters are 12.5″ x 18.5″   I wish they were a bit smaller at 11" x 17" then they could be folded in half and placed in a one pocket binder page so you could see both halves.  I have a portfolio binder thats larger than a normal binder for some over-sized material but its only something like 13" x 13"

I'll have to check the exact measurements, but I did buy an "artist's portfolio" (not sure if I'm using that term correctly) that holds the original posters quite well.  As long as the new posters fit into it, I'll just buy another one of these.  As I recall, I picked it up on ebay and it wasn't too expensive.

Also, knowing that the artists do varying sized pieces, they are probably using art pieces that are larger so when the are blown up they still look sharp.

Ugh! Not too keen on this poster idea. There's no way Topps is packaging these flat without a fold or two. That means there will be white fold lines in the artwork. I'm tempted by the 3 new unreleased titles (which are also probably the 3 different promo cards) and I will probably get a set online at some point. One box will not get you a complete set.

I can envision the Topps Vault selling sets of these posters UNFOLDED at a premium price. If they are not going to retail why do they need to be folded and put into packs? Why not sell a flat box that holds the assortment of posters?

Woohoo, bring on the posters! My favorite Wacky posession is a complete set of 1973 test posters and proper 1974 posters, including Cheapios, Weakies and Toadal (one of my favorite Wackys ever).

I do feel gouged by Topps every time they set up chases that make you buy many more boxes than you otherwise would, but that's down to the collector bug.

You have all the 1973 and 1974 versions?  AWESOME!  I loved these as a kid!!  My set is mixed between years, and still missing a couple of common titles, but I don't work too hard on them because I am, sadly, also missing Toadal.........

Topps is doing it with unopened/unfolded GPK posters from 1986. $50.00 a pop.

They are all folded though I have another unfolded Toadal. I have two framed, Cheapios and Burpsi Cola, otherwise they live in a nice portfolio folder. I've also got a full box that I display. At one point someone on the old forum was selling a complete set of unfolded posters for around $5k, I wish I had that money to burn - I mean invest!

Is it just me or does anyone else feel that all these bonus type cards should be "stickers" instead? If collectors are going to be buying 3 boxes just to get the complete 3 card bonus set, shouldn't it be for something a little more special, not just a card anyone could print with their inkjet printer? I know die cutting costs more, but come on... How much more would it raise the price of boxes? Plus these bonus cards are helping to sell more boxes, right?

I am wondering about the "limited print run" referenced by Non-Sport Update.  How limited are we talking here?

Could this be one of those releases where if we don't get it right away they will be gone? I would like some clarification on the point prior to the release.

I wouldn't worry about that in the slightest. no sketch cards, no frantic, insane, manic buying and hoarding.

the 650 run of the Wacky comic is still available after all this time, and the recent 999 run of the Mars Attack postcards are still abundantly available.

I'll guess a 999 box run, and I'm sure you'll see these posters available for a long time

Since I have no interest in chasing bonus and other cards used as a tease and tie in for buying other products, I will sit back and buy a box of the surplus of boxes that will be in collectors hands for those who bought three boxes merely to get the chaser cards or I may just buy a set of the posters which there will also be plenty as all of these boxes get killed off.

What are your thoughts on the Box price for the posters?  I am thinking  $34.95 per box.
I am not sure I want posters in my collection. I don't have any now even though I purchased lots of them as a kid. If the 3 Promos are of the new titles that will have some appeal as it will be the only way to procure a card sized image of the poster art.  That price will mean droppng over $100 to get three cards. I will also want to know how limited the promo cards are. Hopefully some of these questions will be addressed prior to the sale. Speaking of whch- do we have an actual on-sale date/ time? No mention on the Topps site thus far.

the article on the nsu site linked in the first post says August 29.

If they were bonus "stickers", I would be very tempted to get all 3. I will probably only buy one box, or just purchase singles from forum members or ebay. I would really like to see a checklist first though.

It would be great if Topps made it so you got the set of three bonus cards with a 2 box purchase.  That way you'd get a complete set of posters (if the collation is good) plus a reasonable number of doubles.  The problem I have with buying three boxes is that I've run out of room for all the duplicates that collecting results in.

Precisely what has killed the ANS itch for me. I really enjoyed collecting OLDS3 but I don't know if I want to do the same with OLDS4 due to the sheer amount of extras piling up!

While the price, checklist, and bonus sticker availability will determine how many boxes I buy, price may be the most important.  $40 a box, while not outrageous, would most likely limit me to a single box.

on NSU they speculated a 5x7 pack. Pretty darn big. The box would be as big as the ans9 cello pack box

Topps produced some Garbage Pail Kids posters that were folded down to about a 5 by 7 size.  Don't recall how many packs were in a box, but the packs were stacked in one "pile" in the box so that the box itself was maybe only about 7 by 9.

Just called Topps for some info on the posters. Heres what I learned:

It seems there will be some incentives to purchase multiple boxes of posters.

* Randomly inserted certificates redeemable for a piece of Original Art used for the posters.

* 1 Poster will have a different background than the others- this one may be limited run- no other info on it.
I asked if that means there will be two versions of one of the posters making this a limited variation.
That question could not be answered at present.

*  I asked for a three box order to be gaurenteed to ship with the three different bonus promo cards.
I was told they have done that in the past and hopefully will this time around.

* I asked for a three box bundle option with some type of discount over and above free shipping.

* No info on if the three promo cards will be the three new titles used for the posters.

*  I asked about the quantity of these posters and was told they should be available for a least a few weeks  but no info was available on actual number of boxes for sale.

  * No info was available on the price.

* It was confirmed they will go on sale next wed 8/29 but no time has been set yet.

This makes me feel better about buying three boxes. Getting psyched for this release now.

It certainly does seem to be a common complaint on the forum lately. I myself have suffered from Wacky Fatigue for at least the last year. After that long, perhaps it should be called Chronic Wacky Fatigue Syndrome.

They should do the random inserted certificate for original art in boxes of Wacky Packages Old School 4 (Fall 2012) and Wacky Packages Old School 5 (Early to mid 2013).

Good luck with that as you may have seen recent art auctions. It would be cool if they offered a great art piece up for a pull. I don't see it happening.

The way I see the inclusion of incentives to buy multiple boxes is this:

If we buy three boxes of posters instead of 1 in order to get the extra items then we are helping to fund future wacky releases.  Less "chase" items or total lack of will limit sales of future wacky releases and possibly eliminate them entirely if they don't meet certain sales thresholds.

In other words, the wacky fan base is smaller than we think and each of us can play a part in ensuring future releases by buying extras of current offerings if we can swing it financially.  Special inserts make buying extras more appealing since we got a shot at things like original art. If we all buy a small amount of each release we may not see new releases in the future.

This may be a picky point, but one reason I don't like the variation poster is that the set may not fit as neatly into a binder.  A 24 page binder/artist notebook would neatly contain a set (or two sets if stored back-to-back, which is probably how I'd do it).  A set containing 25 wouldn't fit so neatly.  Oh well, if the variation is truly rare and I got one, I'd probably just throw it on ebay.

Thanks for posting the info!

I can envision the Topps Vault selling sets of these posters UNFOLDED at a premium price. If they are not going to retail why do they need to be folded and put into packs? Why not sell a flat box that holds the assortment of posters?

DrDeal

They could easily be rolled carefully into a hard tube if it is a space issue that they are concerned about.

There are supposed to be three new titles but all the artwork should be new (my assumption). The MOOSE ATTACKS is my favorite Wacky title to come out in quite a while so it will be sweet to get it in the larger size. I am anxious to see the artwork for this one.

There were rumors of that here in the forum but no mention in the advert that I saw. It wouldn't be the first, intentional, un-advertised variation we have seen in the last Wacky year, however.

It nice that they did that so we could stop stalking the site. The price seems a tad high but at least free shipping if you buy two boxes or more. Anyone else care to post what they purchased?

I seriously doubt they need any new artwork for these, and so the only new artwork would be for the 3 new titles. I'm sure they are just large versions of what we already have.

I like the paper. (glossy) Since they are so large some look more like paintings than others. The pack material is the same as the Old School packs. I do not wish to give too much away, but one poster looks different than the others. They fit perfectly in the Itoya 13x 19 art portfolios.

Posters should be back in stock next Monday (Sept 10).

Can we assume that the first run had all of the inserts (i.e.- art coupons), or will Topps integrate them into the 2nd run as well?

my take is that there is only 1 run.  it's just that topps didn't receive the entire order at once and has temporarily stopped selling boxes until they get them.
with only 3 pieces of art, those inserts won't stretch very far

Got my shipment at 7:15 PM here in NJ.  Did not complete a set of 24 posters untill near the end of box #3.
Nice quality on the posters, Promo Cards , wrappers and boxes. No poster variant. Poster #6 has a color background while the rest have a white backround. I received two #6's which are both the same so I don't think there is a regular white background version. Nice set.

Thanks Topps,   DrDeal

Also got mine today. Got all but #6 in my first two boxes. Got one in my third, so I'm complete. Paper is quite heavy stock, they're folded into 9ths (3x3) so the folded up size is about 4x6. I didn't measure them, but I'd say the sealed packs are 5x7, as was assumed. My keepers are already in an art profolio and like Demented said, they fit great in a 13 x 19. I'm not wild about most of the titles, but it's a cool variation from stickers, postcards, etc.

I just checked my UPS tracking number and mine were delivered this morning (Thursday). They will have to be lonesome until I get there this evening. We live out in the country and our dog (sheltie sized)  is outside all day loose. When she was a pup, she liked to take small packages from the front porch and leave them on the back porch. She wouldn't chew them but just liked them back there better apparently. Then there was the time we came home and found a racoon ripping into a box that contained a Pepperidge Farm food basket like item a relative sent.  "Green Acres is the place to be... "

My guess is there are 24 pieces of original art. Topps had the original 1973-1974 wacky posters repainted to fit the dimensions of poster size or some other reason and I have a feeling that all of these 2012 wacky posters are new artwork repainted as well (not just the three new titles).

I still don't know what the print run for this series is.

I really don't believe so, I think there's just the 3 new pieces and that's it. they shouldn't need new art with this set, as the poster dimensions appear to be picked to match the existing art.

So I sold my 22 out of 24 posters partial set plus two doubles and the box and empty packs on the bay for $38.00. Whoever purchased it can try to trade for the two he didn't get. Right now it looks like Mr Turbo has the only full sets for sale. $107 seems a bit steep. He is benifitting from the tempoary out of stock sign up now on the Topps site. After factoring in my costs and sale price I have $82 into getting a full set of posters, the three promo cards , and 6 dupe posters.  I think I made out alright. I really like the Moose Attacks, Panthers and Frite Loops posters.

I think "promo" in this case means created to promote the sales of the posters.  I doubt they would hand them out. If they ever did that with the mini postcards created to make us buy regular postcard sets that would create a disruption in the Wacky Universe.  I trust they will not push us too far.   :)

Oh - And if anyone has an extra Coca-Cobra available, I am interested.

Same here. Love the Panther, and the detailed snakes on Wriggling is incredible! However, Killson doesn't really seem Wacky to me. Too dark/disturbing how the kid is begging for his life... Now why that one bothers me, but something like Cram, with the kid's teeth flying out doesn't, I don't know. Maybe because Cram is so over the top.

Based on eBay sales and the trade participation thread. I can see many aren't buying the posters. it is obviously a fail for Topps. If my bonus cards don't sell on eBay I won't offer them again because not too many will have a set. I have a hunch these posters may end up as rare as the originals.

While there may be a genuine disinterest in these posters I think much of the fence sitting or lack of buying stems from the saturation we've seen from Wacky Packages in the past year.
Title: Re: Wacky Packages posters - series 1 (spoilers)

I think they should of never folded them and just shipped them in tubes. This may have helped sales. It seems funny to put out cash for a box of folded posters, especially when in the past, the ANS series had posters inside the hobby boxes which seemed to be free. Free in the sense that if you bought the box, you get the poster inside. Since the Posters themselves are the reason to buy these (I'm not chasing the bonus cards here), then the Posters should of been kept in good condition for the buyers. I think this could of been a big difference especially for the collectors like us.

Yes, but then Topps would not be able to offer unfolded versions of the posters on eBay at inflated prices!

While there may be a genuine disinterest in these posters I think much of the fence sitting or lack of buying stems from the saturation we've seen from Wacky Packages in the past year.

I think these would have sold much better if they had used more good titles. Since these are web only they should have used titles they know actual collectors like. They picked newer / not that cool IMO titles like Canaduh Dry, Rat Guard, Weightes, Call of Doody. Theree are a few I like such a Moose Attacks, Panthers , Coca Cobra and Zilla but most do nothing for me.

I got $60 for my dupes from 3 boxes so am out $60 for the set and bonus cards. Not too bad.

On a side note, Topps has some banner ads promoting this release that are popping up on different sites I visit. That kind of marketing is creepy but that's not what is weird. The horizontal banner ad has Franken Bury on it which is NOT in this release.  Duh!

the titles that they picked for this new series are weak in my opinion, why not mix it up with some series 1-16 titles?
It seems that Topps is all ways using the same titles over and over. I would like to see some of the rarer wackys used.

I noticed with ANS 9 they used a lot of titles that were already released as Foils.

With only a few auctions and not much selling I would say this series is a dud but what could very well happen is that they could turn out to be super rare in the future when new collectors are trying to find them. I don't plan to buy any more boxes but keep an eye on this in the next couple years.

I know this was mentioned before, but I'm trying to avoid going through the whole thread.  Is this the portfolio people are using for the posters?

http://www.amazon.com/Itoya-Profolio-Evolution-Storage-Display/dp/B00013D2TW/ref=sr_1_1?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1345057371&sr=1-1&keywords=Itoya+Art+Profolio+Evolution+Storage%2FDisplay+Book+13+in.+x+19+in

If you are using one, are you happy with it?

Thanks for any info!

It is this one but this isn't listed with Prime

It's pretty good but the pages are super thin. I guess I'm used to the nice ultra pro pages.

So has anyone gotten or seen any original art? How do you win it? Is there something in the box or in an individual pack?

Thanks for the link!  From a relatively quick perusal (did I spell that correctly?), I can't really tell any difference between the two.  That's interesting given that they are from the same company.

Over the past 2 years, I picked up one of each. About the only difference is one has a "tougher" more plasticized cover than the other. Both would be fine for holding the posters. I check Amazon occasionally for several of the different sized portfolios because you can sometimes find some really nicely priced ones. I use a smalled one for the WP advert and box posters. The prices on ebay are all over the place for the same item.

I think the issue with the Wacky Posters series one, at least with some collectors mentalities, is that this is not a limited edition print run. There is no number attached with this series one poster print run at all. They are like regular edition (not limited edition) wacky pack postcards, which have no set print run and in fact could be reprinted and continued to be sold if Topps wanted to do that (if it was profitable for them to do that). Topps could reprint Wacky Postcards series 3 right now and start selling that product again on their website for the next five years if they want to. Just because Topps is throwing in promo cards (which might also be über available and reprintable) and as little as three certificates for original art (who knows...maybe only rough original art like they offered for Old School 3) doesn't mean that this is not a plain old mass produced regular run wacky series.

PS With that said, the artwork looks great on this scale and it's excellent glossy paper! I like the series. I'm just not that interested in it as a sometme collector of rarer modern wackies

I don't care a bit about future value, all I know is they brought back the posters! I'm psyched, even if the selection wasn't ideal - hell, it wasn't ideal in 1974 either but I still love 'em.

SO, now that some time has gone by, does anyone know about the "randomly inserted certificates redeemable for an original 2012 Wacky Package Poster Series One Painting"? I am wondering how these certificates are inserted. Inserted into the boxes, in an envelope like the sketches? Inserted right inside the packs with the poster inside?

I did a quick comparison of some of the Itoya Art Profolios using web address for Dick Blick:    http://www.dickblick.com/products/itoya-original-art-profolios. Looks like the prices are pretty comparable with Amazon. I was able to find some of the items for $3 or $4 cheaper on Amazon for certain sellers because of free shipping, others were higher. Guess the best practice is to check 2 or 3 places to see who currently has the best price/shipping right before buying. But Jay may get an "ultra-talented" discount for art supplies that I am not privy too.

The Dick Blick brand items are about half the price of the Itoya portfolios. Are they as nice?

I think probably Dick Blick perhaps hires Iota to make the Dick Blick portfolios.  I have both types, and they appear to be exactly the same thing.  Only difference is the label. On close comparison, some of the Blick folders seem to have a little thinner covers than some of the Iota folders...  But it may be that all of the Iota folders now have thinner covers now. Some of the Iota ones I have are ten years old.  It may be that the older Iota ones have thicker covers than the newer Iota ones.  But it doesn't matter.  None of the covers are thick enough to store 'em vertically anyway.

Since these Iota and blick folders don't stand upright without reinforcement, I tend to engastrate several of 'em inside of these things to fit 'em into taller shelving units.  But I buy these by the hundreds, so I get a better price for 'em.  http://www.wildcatwholesale.com/ProductCart/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=51

Since you'd want to keep out UV light, I recommend only black photo boxes...so here is a link to just those.  I don't know what size the posters are...but some of these probably fit the portfolio binders in the size of your choice.  http://www.wildcatwholesale.com/ProductCart/pc/Black-Leather-Photo-Boxes-c23.htm  They also keep dust and smoke from the open portion of the portfolio pages.

Nice to know. At about $22 for some of the larger sized Iota portfolios, the savings on the DB ones old be great, especially knowing quality is not compromised. I did notice that in some of the sizes, Iota appears to make 2 slightly different types of covers. The more expensive is a thicker, smooth cover whereas the less expensive is a thinner slightly textured cover.
