100% Grating Cheese - funny and we used this product frequently.
$0.00001 - very clever.
Squint - would fit right in the original series. A classic.
Le Sore Peas - wonderful the art on this one.
Brains Burgers - made me laugh aloud.

(Must be in the air - I was thinking the same thing today - glad you started it! Unfortunately, I couldn't do just 5...)

Have to say there were a lot of really good art/gags for me in this series. Definitely my favorite of the OLDS so far, and my favorite newer series since I don't know when. Here's my top 10:

* Apple Tacks - Hilarious and fantastic artwork/detail without being cluttered. A "true" Wacky in my mind.
* Olden Grahams - Same as Apple Tacks for me - fantastic artwork/detail and great gag.
* Preparation H-Bomb - Made me laugh out loud! Great artwork. Great gag.
* Squirt - Took me back to buying the original product in a glass bottle. Superb artwork.
* Brains-Burgers - one of the best gags I've seen in a long time! Zombie dogs! Hilarious!
* 100% Grating Cheese - another really funny gag and a product we used all the time.
* Grave Poupon - superb artwork and very funny gag.
* Pig Boy - Love the simplicity, artwork, and gag (we had a Bob's Big Boy near us as a kid).
* Wallow Balsam - that pig looks so happy it made me smile.
* Charredstone Chew - great gag and brought back happy memories of this tooth-pulling treat

Honorable Mentions for me:

* Le Sore's - superb artwork on the can - my wife recognized the product from far away
* Souse Trap - tons of detail that begs for that 5x7 parallel series I've been wishing for!
* Cling Freek - hilarious gag!
* Grim - love the artwork, especially the lid
* Bat - the double pop-top gag is classic imo
* Stake 'ems - fantastic artwork
* Mr. Babble - hilarious gag and took me back to the one time we had this as a kid!

EVEN WITH MAGNIFIED GLASSES I CANNOT SEE THEM WELL ENOUGH TO COMMENT,MY 5 PICKS CAME FROM THE 3 THAT OCCUPY THE "CENTER SQUARE" ON THE 9 COUNT PAGES AND 2 OTHERS,WITH THE MEDIAN AGE OF THIS FORUM,MAKE THESE OLDS SETS POSTCARD SIZE OR SLIGHTLY SMALLER.

Aye, I really want that 4x6 or 5x7 parallel series of just the base OLDS cards - would be glorious!

Speaking of small: anyone else notice on Olden Grahams the tiny white bits are bingo balls! Dang. And Meow Mix has a TON of detail!

Maybe we can get someone on the inside to post blow-ups of the artwork again. That is always outstanding.

Ok... back to the topic...

My top 5:

1) Clorocks (could totally be an original series card)
2) Prep. H-Bomb (too funny)
3) Cling Freak (also too funny & clever)
4) 0.00001 Bar
5) Stretch Armstrain (yup, remember straining to try and rip him apart)

Grave Poupon and 100% Grating are really cool too. Real fantastic set overall !  ;D

I *really* like this set.  Good job Topps!

My top 5:

BAT - omg so funny and the double pull tabs genius hahaha
Brains burgers - Zombie dogs?  fresh!  12 juicy brains had me laughing
Squint - Looks like a classic wacky clean lines looks like a real bottle oO
Meow Mess - So much detail on this one I can see Norm painting something like this
MoronGard - Dunno I just love the stupid jerk on the can of paint hahahaha classic

TBH I love a lot more of them too.  This was hard to pick just 5.

Picking just 5 is tough!  There are so many in this set that I think are fantastic!

I'd have to go with the following:

Souse Trap - Such detail!  Love the drunks, but especially the little pink elephant, funny gags.  Reminds me of Brandy Land.
Six Dollar Man - One of my favorite toys back then, I actually still have it.  Good gag, excellent package, the font is perfect!
Apple Tacks - How was this never an OS Wacky?  I love the old packaging with the two characters.  Free detention inside is funny.
Bat - My mom drank Tab all the time.  The package is great, great gag reversing the name, and I love the two pull tabs!
Pig Boy - I remember going there a lot.  Great gag, the character is perfect, and the burger, condiments and sack are wonderful.

I hate leaving out these:

Grim - Another great gag, and a well-rendered jar.  The lid is fantastic.
Stretch Armstrain - The gag here is perfect, as playing with this toy was great arm exercise.
100% Grating Cheese - Nice simple gag, and the packaging is perfect yet again.  The guy holding his head is awesome.
Grave Poupon - Like the gag, love the jar.
Squint - This is just classic!  I had forgotten about Squirt soda.  Not sure I get the gag, but that was true with a number of OS Wackys that I always really liked.

The gag is that popping the top squirts the person in the eye which would cause you to squint.

I did a Souse Trap thumbnail for an early ANS. It never made it due to the content. You had been asking for that one to be a sticker. I was real happy to have been able to include that one in this series. I think that was my favorite piece to paint. It sure took the longest (well, that and Tiger Eat).

I should mention that Jay, Fred and Mark worked on gags for this series besides me. When I post images and stuff later I will LYK what they did.

hahaha yea i got that one on squirt.  i love 16 sour oz.  well done wacky.  good job.

i didn't put tiger eat in my top 5 but omg i sure notice the attention to detail.  the more i look at it the more it is growing on me.  i really like it.

this set was a masterpiece.  congratulations on a job well done.

*edit* looked closer at tiger eat.  saw the 'dec 1975' in the 'T'.  so much details.  it is amazing

Duh! - I should have figured that one out   :-\   Thanks for the help.

Souse Trap is incredible, and perfect for the series!  I remember that box with the contraption on it, and you definitely did it justice!

My eyes must be getting bad because I can barely see the art on that one!  That's one I would definitely like to see the original art.

Dave is painting some more insanely detailed ones for series 4 as well.   So while I'm thinking about it....  Dave, be sure to save 1200 dpi images of this stuff.  Some day in the far future,  Topps will probably license 7 foot high wall murals again, and If the resolution of the saved images is too low, they will have to retouch it by hand for the larger sized stuff.

I never knew there were bats with the beans. It's like I'm seeing new stuff. We really need to do a postcard set of OLDS. I know it's been discussed so if you are looking for some fun inserts in OLDS4 that would be really special. Can you imagine 3 cards per box? It would take about 150 boxes to put together all 4 sets. Yikes!

Obviously we (non artists) are doing our part by buying but does anyone have graphical statistics to show what topps needs to hit in sales to continue hiring artists and printers (shipping) for further productions?

Wow, thanks for posting the original artwork, it is astounding. So much detail and so much fun to take it all in this way.

This is really a SUPERB series, both for the artwork and the gags, and the "extras". Five stars all the way for all involved!! :great:

'em' would actually make more senses since it's short for them. You are dealing with Wacky's here and they rarely make sense ;D

Hence I don't get the um and um gag at all.  "Um" is usually a sarcastic way of calling attention to something....

Here are the rough concepts I contributed. It was fun to work on this set.  Of course, Dave painted the finals.

(http://s18.postimage.org/hktshh391/000000_Bar_Compare.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/hktshh391/)
I like the idea of putting the 1 on the other end.

(http://s18.postimage.org/82u1hfhkl/Bang_Compare.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/82u1hfhkl/)
I can see why the word Dry was left off because Dry Bang can be interpreted a whole different way.

(http://s18.postimage.org/riegle6k5/Brains_Burgers_Compare.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/riegle6k5/)

(http://s8.postimage.org/5jfg7ml4h/Cling_Freak.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/5jfg7ml4h/)
This was the first concept for Cling Freek.

(http://s10.postimage.org/zdy8f4zn9/Cling_Freek2.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/zdy8f4zn9/)

(http://s14.postimage.org/byz3ooln1/Clorocksboth.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/byz3ooln1/)
This was submitted two different ways for an ANS set and was finally accepted for Old School 3.

(http://s12.postimage.org/h2ujup27t/Clorocks2.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/h2ujup27t/)

(http://s13.postimage.org/745eqenb7/Tiger_Eat_Compare.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/745eqenb7/)
I was able to remain pretty faithful to the celebs appearing on the cover.

(http://s15.postimage.org/ulalb0w47/Mr_Babble_Compare.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/ulalb0w47/)
Mr. Babble was originally submitted for an ANS set so that's why the packaging is so different.

Why was Paul Michael Glaser (from Starsky and Hutch) on the original Tiger Beat cover replaced with David Cassidy on the Tiger Eat spoof? The caption could have read "Mauled Michael Glaser." I also noticed the title box in the upper left corner is pink. The box is actually red. The cover photo used was a faded copy. I'm not trying to nitpick. I'm just bored...waiting for the next set of postcards!!!

Now that I've finished my set and looked at the larger images...

* Meow Mess is very impressive from the artwork standpoint. It must have taken a lot of time to get all the details on the cats. This was one I was glad to see enlarged so I could really see the detail.

* Preparation H-Bomb has a laugh-out-loud gag. Loved it from the start.

* I can remember the $100,000 bar, either the wrapper or the commercial, featuring a guy with the bar. Dave must have remembered him well because his character painting definitely resembles him.

* If I remember the name correctly of the product Stake-Ummm parodied, it's "Steak-Ummm," hence why it may not have been changed that much.

* Souse Trap really looks good enlarged as well, ditto for Homely Comb.

Thanks for sharing the images and roughs, Dave and Mark.

Would like to hear opinions on the series concerning the structure. How do people like the Lud, tan, whites, what did you think of the chase cards, the art, gags, etc. Working on the plans for OLDS4 now.

I really enjoyed the series.  The sets with different backs were fun to assemble, and it was fantastic to get the stickers of die cuts.  Lipoff Tea was a special treat!  With the logo cards, any chance there could be stickers of the original Wacky logo?

Overall, I really liked the art and gags.  I've already made magnets of several.  The poster is cool, with nice artwork, and I'm looking forward to putting a set of stickers on it.  The only thing that has held me back is the size.

Looking forward to Old School 4!

As seems to be the trend, I agree with RawGoo on almost all these issues. The main point I differ on is that I won't be using the poster and wouldn't miss it next go 'round. But I really liked the different backs and the die cut subset. In addition to stickers of the original Wacky logo, I'd love to see stickers of unopened packs and the original series box art.

Thanks for a great set and thanks for posting the rejected roughs!

I was going to ask for an album to stick stickers in next time, but figured that would be too expensive.   Guess I just enjoy sticking my Wackys  :-\

I'm going to bring a poster to my friend's house along with a set of stickers, and spend some time with her boys sticking the stickers.  Hopefully then we'll be allowed to put it up on the wall in their playroom in the basement.  Even if that gets nixed, I think the kids will get a big kick out of playing with the stickers and poster.  And, what better way to use up extra Wackys than by giving them to little kids to stick?

agree that it was great to get the die-cuts as stickers, although I'll admit I was a bit disappointed that they were just the "Flashback 9" set. While Cracked Animals may never happen due to a lack of a quality image, some of the others are around.
Overall I enjoyed this set a lot. Opened far more packs than I had for the prior series, which was good thing.

I really enjoyed opening and collating this series. Great fun!  :great:

I agree with RawGoo that I'd rather have an album available (maybe as a separate purchase?) as I am not that fond of posters (I have nowhere to put them and I don't like the creases, etc.). I would have purchased an album to put some extra stickers in to actually stick them (like I did as a kid) and see them in an interesting context (like the poster's art or earlier album's art did). Fun and portable!

I agree with DrSushi that I'd prefer to have something other than the three colored Wacky Logos, and I was thinking pictures of the original unopened packs too (great minds think alike!). I also still like the idea of pictures of gum -- or better yet: a scratch-and-sniff card of the original gum smell (complete with real sugar and none of those toxic artificial sweeteners) as a one per box deal. Wouldn't that be cool?!

I liked having an Old School set of chase cards, but it drives me crazy when there are 10 of a chase set. 9 is perfect for displaying in binder pages but 10 is pure evil. This is a pet peeve of mine (can you tell?).

I would love to have multiple puzzles -- maybe three -- as I (like others) am always ending up with TONS of the same puzzles. Or make these multiple puzzles do something interesting like e.g. if it were three of the Hippy Days there could be three different versions of Hippy Days: one just like the card, one slightly different, and another even more different. This could be like the way the original Wacky Posters differed from the stickers. Or what about doing a puzzle for each base card? Now THAT would make them interesting!

The back variations were superb imo, and having two variations of the Ludlows was brilliant. Originally I was hoping for a red Ludlow set but then I think that will make collecting too hard, so I would stay just the way you did. It was "obtainable" by most people here and not crazy (like the Golds and the ANS8 Silvers which turned me off).

Intentional error cards could be a good idea, but I'm afraid of the permutations at the same time. ;)

Still hoping for a parallel set of the base cards (all 33) in postcard size -- preferably as postcards (not stickers). Would be great to really appreciate the AMAZING artwork that cannot be completely seen in miniature, PLUS you could actually MAIL them to people to increase Wacky Awareness. How's that for a great idea? :)

This series was by far the most fun to open and sort than the prior two.  I thought the back variations were cool.  It would have been neat if the Luds were about twice as rare as the whites, but there are nice nonetheless.

Instead of a scratch & sniff (which would be cool by the way) why not use real sticks of gum like the old days?  It seems many aren't crazy about the poster, so if they nix that they can use the money to put into the cost of gum and insertion into the packs!

10 to a subset drives me nuts too.  It makes it so hard to display them in a manner that makes sense and looks nice.  Same problem with the 55-card ANS series.  They don't seem to plan their series for 9-pocket pages but I bet that's how the majority of collectors display them.

I would love to see a puzzle variation of some sort.  I would 3/4 the series with all 33 titles and then 1/4 removing one title from the set and take it off the checklists.  That would create a Pupsi-like card and a variation puzzle that would be tougher to get but not impossible.

What are we supposed to do with these posters anyway? Put them on our bedroom wall. :^)
They are really quite useless, why not throw in an olds 3 postcard or something.

Loved the OLDS3 set.  Art and gags were 100% on point...except maybe stake-umm should be stake-emm.  Not too much interest in back variations, but I can understand most people liking all the back variations to keep their interest and the collecting juices flowing.

The quality of this set made me buy a binder and then an extra set to put in the binder.  Then I bought a sealed box hahaha so you can see I caught the bug.  I hope you keep making these.  I can see the sketches are a big driver of sales for Topps so I am all for it to keep the consumption high enough to justify additional series.  Too bad the artists can't share somehow in the secondary market sales for them.

I think this one was rejected by Topps lawyers  ;)

(http://s17.postimage.org/nebsll0rv/Shyster_Cola_roughsmall.jpg) (http://postimage.org/image/nebsll0rv/)

What if you didn't tell us this and released it then pulled it hahaha it would be like the old days.  Another pupsi-cola.

Also 10 card chase sets suck hahaha!  Hello! people put their stickers in 9-pocket sheets!  Please keep this in mind.

Scratch 'n sniff gum cards?? Never thought of it...kinda weird but maybe good for one or two packs, but then it would get old like the logo stickers so maybe 1 per box??  Gum in the pack?  It sounds great I guess but I am meh on it...It is an extra expense and I would rather have the series continue with art and gags if the savings from not having gum in the pack makes some economic difference.

I see a lot of people having sooooo many extra sets after getting the sketches and opening all their boxes.  We need something to do with these stickers.  A sticker album would be awesome!

God I know this is impossible but wax wrappers would make the series so much more authentic.  I read that the machines to do this are no longer available so it sucks but when I bought the box the cello? wrappers and styro-foam block seemed out of place with the whole experience.  I understand economics and manufacturing realities have to be acknowledged though.

Overall you are doing great with old school.  I am loving this renaissance and hope it continues for a long time.

I think this one was rejected by Topps lawyers  ;)

This title is brilliant.  The more I look at it, the more it bothers me that they turned it down.  Love the ambulance chasing and the 1/2 ounce line.  The whole concept is brilliant.

Too bad for us.  We lose.  Final Score: Topps 1  Customers 0

I'm still laughing over the "only 1/2 ounce...so sue us!" line...GENIUS!

Shyster Cola and SnailCaps are both really good imo. Don't understand why they would be rejected.

I like Rob's idea of pulling a title part way in, but I would definitely prefer if it were replaced with another title, although I know this is more work (since you need 34 titles to begin with). Doing this 3/4ths of the way through seems like a good idea too.

Brilliant on another level too. It's not just a good wacky, it also totally FITS the Old School theme, and once again, could of even been a card from back in the day !

Shyster and Snail Caps !

Would like to hear opinions on the series concerning the structure. How do people like the Lud, tan, whites, what did you think of the chase cards, the art, gags, etc. Working on the plans for OLDS4 now.

I would just like to add that the art on the poster is fantastic.  Kinda a Wally Wood, Bill Elder feel to it.  Real eye candy!  I can't disagree that the poster format is a bit challenging -- especially in a small New York apartment.  But the design and execution of the image are so strong, I wanted to give that a shout out.

I agree the artwork in the poster is top notch. Would have loved to have this in an 8 1/2" x 11" album so I could store it (filled with Wackys) with all my binders.

My latest Wacky project. I call this technique “image carving”

I want to use this method to make custom binder covers from posters and sketch cards. I finally learned how to copy colors (after two years of cerebral wondering, I recently did a Google search and learned how in a few seconds). With some patience and a steady hand, one can create collages. Brent’s website also has the poster version with no yellow. I wonder why the second one turned out blurry, since I made and resized both images the same way.

Hence I don't get the um and um gag at all.  "Um" is usually a sarcastic way of calling attention to something....

A bit late to the party here, but I think this is a simple case of keeping some part of the original product name intact:

If keeping part of the original name in tact hurts the gag, it is a bad decision.

Sorry I have not been on here more but I'm very busy with OLDS4 and lots of life stuff.

Would like to hear opinions on the series concerning the structure. How do people like the Lud, tan, whites, what did you think of the chase cards, the art, gags, etc. Working on the plans for OLDS4 now.

I liked the concepts that were introduced but, as somebody who is only able to afford to buy one box, I think Topps should keep in mind that, because this product is only sold by the box through their ToppsOnline store, that it shouldn't be treated like the products which are made available in more locations and sold as single packs, boxes, bonus boxes, etc.

I do want to thank Brad for his willingness to send me the remaining stickers I needed to finish the tan base set, but it would have been nice for me to be able to put together one tan base set out of the box. Don't get me wrong, I understand that trading is always an option, but I think putting at least one tan base set from a box isn't something that should be too objectionable, as there are still opportunities for trading with the parallels and such.

I will add that I miss the jumbo stickers that were part of the previous two series and would like to see them return.

As far as the titles themselves go, they have been great... I can't think of one title I felt shouldn't have been included, which I think says a lot for everyone who works on the Old School series. And getting the sketch card in every box continues to be a nice treat.

Would be nice to see some of the products for which ideas have been rejected, make it into future series, though. And I believe Dave mentioned something about late 1970s and early 1980s products being parodied, which I think is a good idea. I can think of quite a few products that came out on the tail end of the original Wacky series and/or when the reissues came out, and that was the time frame when I was doing my own homemades. Wouldn't mind seeing some of those products get the Wacky treatment.

Why would they reject this?!?

Maybe just the name?  RAVIN'ETTS?    Or maybe 'cause "organisms" sounds too much like you know what.   "Tiny Chocolate Covered Nanotech Creatures?"   But nanotechnology wasn't popular in the '70s.

Why does it say "Avoir" on the real package?  Did the REAL Raisinetts guys put it there to make it Wacky?

Dang, I remember seeing this on some things as a kid. Always wondered what the heck that was.

Looks like Avoirdupois Ounces are the standard ounces we use for measuring weight, versus Troy Ounces used for precious metals. So the Avoir is something dropped awhile ago. Would be interesting to know why they would go to the trouble to put that on there.

Here's a quick quip (http://www.coinnews.net/2007/07/22/weighing-in-the-precious-metal-difference/) on the difference. And a handy calculator (http://www.thecalculatorsite.com/conversions/massandweight.php) should you ever need to convert between the two. ;)

of course, I immediately thought of the sexual innuendo of "raisin' it"  >:D

And if you look and quickly read the word "organisms" (as Jay points out), you
may go further into the depths that be....

My contribution to OldS3.
In the end, the only thing they used was the gag.

Thanks. Topps didn't want to use Clint's likeness for some reason. Back in the 70's (or maybe it was 80's), a TV station ran marathons of Clint's westerns, calling it "Squint Like Clint" week. Thought that would fit right in with OldS...
