Title: Halloween Series Sketches Scans
Post by: FourRoses on October 18, 2011, 03:06:50 PM
Nicely done set. Bog Red seems to really stick out at me for some reason as does Ork. Mini postcard is a plus as is the Weakies propaganda material thrown into the box. The cards are sturdy and have a nice re-occurring theme on the back(s).

First two sketches are:

Are those 2 of the same Lynch sketches? I wish I could read what it says.

I see 2 Engstrom Vampires have shown up. That tells me that it's probably fairly common. One collector also pulled 2 of the same toothie roll sketch that are pretty similar. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say all Lynches are probably different just like PC7

Both one in the same.

"Lil' werewolf gal, we townfolk done took up a collection to buy you this one-way bus ticket to New York City! You can do your werewolfin' there from now on. We is sick of you."

Response: "Hully gee! Thanks, Mister Mayor! I've always wanted to see C-B-G-B.'s!"

Just regular UPS.  I live Manhattan, so maybe that helps with shipping speed somehow?

Everyone's sketches are sketch-o-rific, but I especially like the last one you posted. Very minimalistically eerie (I don't even know the characters yet).

Yeah, all three are superb.  I got a thing for the frogs, Pat's drawing at the bottom is so eerie, and Neil's Ork is outta this world.

Can I assume this is a Jeff Zapata sketch since the artist doesn't seemed to have signed it?  Anyone intersted in sketch trades, let me know.

Could be, he was the artist for this title so I assumed it is his.  I only want to get one keeper sketch, I know several collectors will try to get one of each artist sketch so I am making the two pictured available for now...

I don't think you are going to see big sales for the next day or so. People want to see what they get before buying anything.

I just started to sort out the different sketch titles/artists that have surfaced so far, and it is getting crazy.  I already have seen 13 different ones, and I've counted four each already from Neil and Brent!

It's seems the artists are "cross-breeding" with this series.  For example, I've seen both All Toads and Hairy Mane from Brent, and neither of those titles were his, either concept or art.

I got my 3 sets tonight and I'll post my scans in the morning.

I absolutely love the All Toads postcard.  I think it's my favorite post-2004 Wacky!  I don't own any original art but if that one showed up I might want to take a shot.  For now I'll take the postcard and put it into a frame!

Love this! The evolution of sketch cards is very encouraging!

I'm also hoping these excellent Lynch cards are a sign of things to come in OS3! :great:

Well, I've seen 4 already and they are almost all the same. With the new series just getting in a few collectors hands I would say its common. With 660 sketches I'm trying to see what are the common sketches. We've seen a few examples of very unique Lynch sketches but none have shown up on eBay yet. They will soon.
Look at the Simko PC7 sketch. Too many showed up and drove down price dramatically.

I think we'll know better after another 3-4 days or so when we can look at a larger sampling.  If Joe S. only did that one title it would be one of the more common ones.

I still find it humerous that all you care about is scareness of sketches and evaluation of the "market".  I am glad I only seek one sketch I like per set now.  I give zero credance and worry to common-ness or scareness of sketches.  It allows me to purely evaluate the "look" and not the "market".

We'll know more in a week. We've seen these signs before and the prices drop like rocks. Basically telling people to wait on common sketches and you will find them for under $30 each in a few weeks.
I'm saying this without actually seeing what I pull! I sure hope I get 3 Lynches and one is color...LOL

Read my previous post. It is about market value if you need the common sketches for your own collection. No need to pay more than you have to.

Read my post, I don't care about common-ness of sketches.  Before the common-ness or scareness is even known, I made mine available for trade just purely looking for one I want to make my keeper.  IF I trade away a "scarce" one for a common one, so be it....I don't care, get it yet?

I said I find it to be humerous that you primarily speak about sketches only in terms of commonness and pricing.  Barely 10 sketches have hit the market and you are already speculating on "commonness".  Do you even find the sketches cool, exciting, eerie, boring....or are they just commodities to you?  Have you noticed the number of "combos" like Dr Popper has?  I think the "combo" that drdeal sold on ebay last night for $65 was cool and I am kicking myself for not buying it as it would likely have been my keeper even if it turns out later that 100 similars ones were created.

Will a new wacky pack series be able to come to market without the first concern being "value" before an analysis of the gags and coolness of the product is discussed?

I thought it was a good price too but I have a feeling that we are going to find more combos with this series than with the past series.  I've already seen 3 different ones Neil did and all 3 had different characters, so I wouldn't be shocked to find out that he did an ORK combo with every postcard character.  If that's true it will lower the value of them for sure.

I also noticed a few of these "All-Stars" ones Neil did, and he may have done one of those for every character!  If my assumptions are correct I'm not going to try to collect all of them.  That would be crazy.  I think I'll stick to the ones that pertain to the artists that did them.

I explained that if a sketch is common then they are easier to come by if you don't get one with your initial order even if they are really cool. Why spent $100 now for a sketch when you can get it for around $30 in a few weeks. Me saying something is common is just me telling everyone my opinion and not telling people what to collect. I also stated that the combo was cool and I would have bought but missed out. I also said he sold it too cheap.
Man, why do I have to keep repeating myself. I don't think you read my posts ;D

Thanks for your biz.  I sorta hated to part with that one.  It's definitely a unique and eerie sketch.  But, after Series 1, I've made it a point to collect only one sketch from each Postcard release.  And I like for my keeper sketch to be a more defined character.  Now I've just gotta decide which of my remaining 2 to keep: the frog or the Ork.  Both are pretty cool.  It's going to be a tough decision.

Yep, the Witchimacallit is mine. John didn't do sketches for this series, so I did about half ork and half Witchies, plus a few misc. "all stars" in the mix.

Really? How did you come up with that?
The next sketch I pull could be your favorite. Biting the hand that feeds your obsession is pretty stupid. Especially when you know the guy you're taking a shot at doesn't care about Topps rules or the Wacky Gestapo.

I've got a scenario for everyone. Brad orders 3 sets. His mom, knowing how much Brad loves the sketch cards because he talks her ear off about them, decides to buy him some sets for his birthday. Brad receives the sets. What does Brad do?

A. Return them to Topps and turn himself in to the authorities.
B. Keep them.

The first to answer correctly wins a free sets of series 4 postcards. I'll even sign the Scary Garcia card.

Brad has nobly turned old school stuff back in so others could get some, I think he would do A.

That is the extent of my conversation about Wackys with my family other than my kids.

THIS SKETCH IS HILARIOUS!!!
i love it.  Looking at this sketch I'm wondering if topps would ever gear towards the younger generation as customers for the halloween pc sets?  Does anyone know what age group is the biggest wacky packages customer as a whole. Not vintage wackys or original art but all new series stuff, post cards, and erasers ect.

I don't know about the other stuff, but the postcards are definitely geared towards the older collectors. Afterall, when was the last time you saw a kid mail a postcard? Maybe we need to create a Wacky set based on text messaging - that would probably get their attention! ;)

It seemed like more of a rhetorical question to me. Of course if my mother were to buy me a set of Wackys I would keep them. I still have the check she sent me for my B-day but I still haven't cashed it. I also still have the Wacky calendar my sister bought me even though I had 4 others. It's not a very good question.

I don't see how the postcards differ in appeal or design from the regular kid Wackys. The products spoofed are typical of ANS. There aren't any "adult" products being spoofed anymore. The gags aren't tailored for adults. So while it may be adults that mostly buy them I don't see how are they geared for adults. In fact I would LOVE to see Topps create a series that actually DOES appeal directly to adult sensibilities.

I actually pulled a Simko sketch that was a close up of just a tooth - and  I was just as bummed as the guy on the right in the sketch!  So I quickly sold it on ebay, not knowing there was a companion sketch that makes it totally hilarious.  It would have been awesome to have both sketches, but I was too late to pick up the one shown here.  Double-bummer!

He should be pretty honored to have your autograph especially from a sketch by an artist that doesn't care for the sketch cards.
Nobody's asking for your autograph.

Also, as usual, you're reading comprehension is for the birds. I didn't offer a sketch. And even if I did, why would anyone care that the artist doesn't care for sketch cards? Brad, sometimes I just want to pat you on the head and give you a cookie.

Now on the topic of combos and their vague definition....would a toadlike creature emerging from the Bog count as a combo?

Lets just call a truce. I was a little heated over the stupid poll you ran. I'm sorry if I offended you in any way.

That could be a grey area. Is there also a bog creature in the sketch?

I would say yes but it would be good if you can post a pic.  If it's a frog from Alltoads and the Bog creature than it should be a combo.  There must be over 100 combos with this series!  They are showing up everywhere.

Here are my other two sketches, a Camera Ork and a Kirscht AllToads:

I am thinking of trading/selling my two Ork cards (this one and the combo I posted above) -- I will officially post in the trade/sell area.

It was a hypthetical question as I feel certain such a sketch will show up, I have seen toadlike creates on the sketches on ebay but they have fangs instead of teeth.

I'm still waiting to see a Brent E. combo with the two on his 2X postcard.  It makes sense he would do some of those.

OK, finally got scanning, but "add image to post" kept giving me error messages, and the "additional options" wouldn't let me post my jpg image.  Hopefully this pdf will work!

Here are some cool Halloween sketches, which I had with me yesterday.  I love Neil's mixing of the titles, and Matthew Kirscht's Jack-o-Lanterns make an already beautiful card of a great Wacky title totally Halloweeny.  And I was thrilled to get a Lynch, since I never managed one in PC7.

Too funny, LOL !!!
Here's my answer: (http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx78/Jeffxmusic/DSC00814.jpg)

Here is my latest that I bought 2nd hand on ebay, this will probably be my keeper as I simply wanted an Ork with some form of true halloween element such as a bat, witch, pumpkin....my other thought was to go after a witchimcallit with a bog coming out of the cauldron as I really like the Bogs.  If I am lucky enough to stumble across a Bog, Ork combo with some form of true halloween element such as bat, pumpkin, ghost, spider...then I would be all over that :-)

Scoot, very cool!  Great work.  That's 25 total so far.  We know Jay did 50 of his.  Anyone have a sense of how many sketches per artist.  We have 660 sketches and 6 artists.  I suspect that Brent and Joe did at least 150 each based on how many are on the market but have no idea how many Neil and Zapata did.

Wow, that's some collection you got there!  I'll give you $1,000.00 for the entire lot!  LOL

Would you believe it's 2 days before Halloween and I am in the middle of a bad snowstorm!  We already have a ton of downed branches and trees, and many roads are closed.  The # of people without power is already at 500,000, and we are supposed to get 8-12" total.  Crazy.  I have a nice dogwood right in my front yard and literally half of it is on the ground broken.  I don't think anything will be left of it by morning.

As a I was organizing screen captures from eBay to get all the Bogs together, I was thinking that Brent and Neil must have done, perhaps,  more than an equal share of this series. Looks like Pat's sketches were limited to bogs and Joe Simko's to Toothsie Roll and Zapata to Human Heads but Brent seems to have sketches in most other titles, including Bogs.  All the Crackers Dracs I have seen are Brent's as well as Hairi-Boos. Brent did some Hairy Mane, Orcs, and Alltoads as well. Busy guy. Neil appears to have done all Witchamacallits and a good portion of Orcs and all the cross- over titles I have seen.

You and me both brother.  We have a big tree in our backyard and all day long the heavy snow was snapping off one major limb after another.  Its a friggin mess.  Huge Limbs lying across the entire yard, other limbs up against the house. Another limb is tangled up in a power line causing it to hang down much lower than normal. I was finally able to report this to the electric comany after getting a busy signal all day.

Sorry to hear that. We had a stunning autumn out here in N Colorado and right as it peaked we were hit by a similar storm on Wed. Felt bad for the trees. I hadn't seen them change colors quite as stunning as this before.

Considering there are at least 650 halloween sketches, doesn't the number of sketches on ebay seem low?  Supply and prices both seem to be down, seems very odd.

I would say it's similar to series 7 and since the quantity is higher I guess you could say we should expect to see a little more.  Maybe the flippers weren't able to get as much as the past couple series, which results in more collectors keeping sketches instead of selling.

(checkout the crater-wolf image on the moon in the background)

Gotta love the description....
This is the third and final black and white return sketch card I have done for the 2011 Wacky Packages Halloween Postcard series. It features the Lil' Werewolf Gal from the Hairy Mane Wacky Postcard. This character is also featured in WACKY PACKAGES Comics #1. In this original black and white painting, This beloved character tries her hand at COSPLAY, which is very popular with the kids today at comic conventions in the U.S. and abroad. The youngsters dress up as Superman, Vampirella, Harry Potter, and even Stan Lee. They seem to enjoy it. It may have started in Japan... Or it may have started with the furries... I don't know. These kids today with their crazy trends...I don't know. I just don't know. When I was a kid we didn't have CLOTHES, let alone Lara Croft costumes. But hey! What are you gonna do? It's a space-age a-go-go world we live in today. Used to be you'd have to go to The Century of Progress Expo to even SEE a microwave oven. Now we all have 'em in our homes. They used to call those things "Radar Ranges". I wonder howcome they changed the name of those things. Oh well.... It doesn't matter. What DOES matter though, is that this card is an extremely fancy gouache painting that I did with a tiny brush under a magnifying glass. I've been doing the gags on the printed trading cards for Topps for the last 40 years. I remember the Topps cafeteria back in the day. They even had one of those Radar Ranges in there. That was in the '60s. I remember in the 80s... Mark Newgarden used to order a tuna sandwich with a slice of Swiss Cheese on it. A little bit of trivia for you out there who collect Garbage Pail Kids. Sometimes ( this is when Topps was back in Brooklyn) Art Spiegelman and I would go out of the building and eat at Burger King. Once Len Brown and Rick Varesi and me went to this Italian place, which was really close to Topps. Len and Rick had baked ziti. I think I probably had something simpler, though. Spaghetti and meatballs, probably. It's funny. When old Topps employees get together, they usually can't remember much about the gum cards we did. But they DO remember the various meals they ate. Anyway...I just finished painting this card. So here it is for your bidding pleasure.

...and when Topps had their own cafeteria, another favorite food item there was pizza.  Yeah, pizza.  I don't recall what Bhob Stewart would eat for lunch.  But I think this might make a great Abrams book.  WACKY PACKAGES: What They Ate For Lunch.
I don't think any of those guys, including me, had the foresight to take polaroid pix of our food back then, though.  So the book would have to consist of re-creations of the foods we ate in the form of paintings.  I will suggest that to Abrams...once I hear from them if they accepted or rejected by book on early microwave ovens.

Speaking of crazy trends... Kids back in the 60's and 70's began collecting and trading these flimsy little pieces of sticky paper with painted images that spoofed grocery store products. Wacky-something or other...  :D

Mainly I remember those crazy little stickers that they used to put on food products at the grocery store that told how much an item costs on 'em.  Before they invented UPCs, which allowed them to easily raise the price of stuff every day.

Topps needs to finish their Wacky book series. The 3rd and final volume would have plenty of space left over that you could fill with these stories.

As I've said to you before, I am in awe of your self-restraint!  Old School boxes and Postcard packs do not stay sealed very long around me........   :-\
LOL, I will try to dig out the unsealed packs that I have.  I am pretty sure I have Post Card 6(whatever series it was that Toppsvault had extra packs at the philly show), 2011 Halloween, Olds 1 and Olds 2 sealed packs

I didn't tell anyone... But all of the Halloween 2011 sketch cards I did have imbedded Halloween sounds in 'em.    To hear these sounds, you will need an old casette tape recorder.  What you do is hold the mike over the card and record the inaudible vibrations coming from the card at FAST SPEED with the record volume on the tape recorder turned up ALL THE WAY.   Then switch to slow speed, and play it back with the volume turned up all the way.  Warning:  The resultant sounds may be too frightening for some.  So if you have any medical condition that might be affected by these intense frightening sounds, please only play back your tape in the presence of a physician or registered nurse.  And feel free to post your audio recordings of this phenomenon.

I think you can also hear the Halloween sounds if you hole-punch a sketch card in the middle and play it on a phonograph. Kinda like the records you could cut out from the back of cereal boxes.

I read on the Internets that you can color the edges of each card with blue magic marker to increase the audio quality.

I think the Halloween sounds you hear are the screams of the owner of the sketch card.

I say, bring on the Wacky Wallpaper !! Even more cool, the kind that you have to stare into to find the 3D image. You can make Capn' Crud for the kitchen area, etc.... When a guest walks in to your house, they'll see you staring at the walls and think you're stoned.

Didn't know that Lynch did all of the book illustrations until I got the hairy mane book just yesterday!

Not mis-advertised at all. It's got to be almost a record for the lowest priced color sketch.
