Starting a new thread for "Original Wacky Products". For anyone who doesn't know what that means - it's for posting images of the original product and hopefully the original packaging that was spoofed for the Wacky.
I'm going to start with something from Old School, and one of my faves. Here is an old newspaper ad for Koogle (the product spoofed by Kookle in Old School Series 1), as well as an image of a display shelf belonging to my brother, where you can see two actual jars of the stuff, one empty and one full:

I'm going to be attempting to re-post the Original Wacky products that I had before, within this thread. Starting with some of my personal faves.
Here's a box for the early 70's Slim Jims - the basis for 1970's Original 15th Series Slam Jim

Neat Koogle newspaper ad!
How about a video to go along with it:

JL,
Do you happen to have a Lipton tea bag box, the one parodied as "Hipton"?
I was looking around for one online recently when the "Lipoff" auction was the hot news, and couldn't find anything very good.

Those are great, Ernie - I don't think I've ever looked at those, before. I like how you made them into stickers for comparison.

Very cool, seeing the original packaging (not to mention the wackys), really takes me back. Thanks Ernie

I have a bunch of images scurried away to add to this double project, just never got around to it. I still haven't done my taxes either so obivously my priorities are somewhat screwed up!

I was going over some of my 70's packaging that hadn't been properly added to my Flickr archives yet, and realized that the Knox gelatine box I had was the base design for the original series Knots (8th Series).
I wanted to see how close they were so I threw them together in Photoshop, and they're darned close. I am going to be doing a big Jell-O/Royal posting in a few weeks, so the Knox will officially go up then, but since I had it in Photoshop, I saved out the comparison to share here.

Thanks. I like it. Unfortunately that image expands (or "expandos") well beyond the width of my browser window. The only way I can get a look at the whole big version is by downloading it and opening it in Photoshop. (This is the second time today I've encountered this issue.) I'd have thought I could just scroll (pan?) to the right, but it's not an option. (I'm in Safari, BTW, if it matters.) I know you enjoy sharing images, so I thought I'd mention this. :D

I shrunk it up for ya. I'll keep non-Flickr uploads at 800 width.

I've noticed the same thing. If the expando image is too large to fit on your screen, it creates a scroll bar at the bottom. The problem is, if you move your mouse to the scroll bar to try to move the picture, the picture immediately shrinks again.

Just use the scroll wheel on your mouse.

(Some of the stuff I describe in this post and the one below will not apply if you are using a browser other than Safari.)
test1
The image in this post was uploaded from my hard drive directly to this website.
Looks like you can scroll up and down or left and right, to your heart's content, with the scroll buttons on your keyboard. The image should not reshrink as you do these moves, if your cursor remains steady.
Of course, if you want to allow people to see the whole width of the image at once, your image should not be much more than 800 pixels wide. Keeping it under 700 dpi high also allows people to take in the image without a lot of scrolling.
However, if I were posting a photo with a bunch of individual sketch cards in it, I don't expect people would mind too much scrolling around the image.
-
test2
The image in the above post was uploaded from my hard drive directly to this website. The image below is hosted elsewhere on the web. Its URL was plugged into this post and the "expando" function was applied to it. Both images are the same jpeg, plugged into two posts in two different ways.
I can use the scroll buttons to see the right side of the large version of the image below, but I must first click on the image, either before or after it expands. Simply moving the mouse over the image is enough to make it expand, but you have to click on it in order to scroll around it.
It may sometimes be an inconvenience that this text gets pushed off to the left when I explore the right side of the image. The text in test1 has no such problem.
Again, the stuff I describe in this post and the one above may not apply if you are using a browser other than Safari. For instance, I just tried to scroll right with the test2 image in Firefox and could not get it to work. Whether it will work in Explorer is anyone's guess, since my Explorer for some reason works at a glacial pace, and I've given up on it.
(Sorry for the rat hole, Brad. I'm done.)

The expando image doesn't work too well with Firefox. When I expand the image, there is no way to scroll to the right to see the rest of the image.

I recently acquired an original box for Birds Eye International Recipes - Bavarian Beans and Spaetzle, which just happens to be the basis for Bird Brain Burned Leftovers from the 1970's 11th Series.
My original posting of the box scan can be seen here:

And here is the closest I've found to the basis for the original series 8, Choke-Up - a 1970's Close-Up toothpaste box:

I don't know why I didn't see this thread until this morning but I can see both images and move left and right with Safari and Firefox on my Mac using a Magic Mouse. I have attached videos of each browser to demonstrate.

I second that. I think we all knew the Bird's Eye/Bird Brain part, but how many could possibly know the Barvarian Style Beans and Spaetzle/Burned Style Leftovers part!

Hi guys,
Here's a package for the 1970's cigarette "Eve", the basis for the classic Wacky "Heave":

Love this thread. Love looking at old style packaging from the 70's and earlier.

Hi gang, starting to roll out right now at Wal-Marts across America are three retro Cap'n Crunch cereal boxes, largely based on the late 60's/early 70's designs - though they take some liberties. I bring it up in this thread, as the standard flavor box is very close to the original box that Cap'n Crud is based on.
An original Cap'n Crunch box from the 1960's might set you back $1,000 or more, but these can be had right now (or soon, in some areas) and they're fun.

Just picked up a front and back panel for a late 60's Wheaties box, featuring the design parodied on Weakies:

Awesome! You can really see that this is the right package. You can even see the N on the hat of the Wheaties guy. I also like how they work well together. There's the pitcher about to throw and the batter getting hit.
-
This must be taking place in Spring Training. How else to explain the two guys on the same team?
-

What a second here, the guy at home isn't batting, he's fielding. And he's at home plate but doesn't have a catcher's mitt. If it's not the pitcher covering home, maybe it's the first baseman who was trying to back up a throw to home ... oh, forget it. It's just wacky.

I guess that rules out the theory that the "N" stands for Norm.

The pitcher and catcher are one in the same. He's throwing the ball to himself, in an alternate reality. Yes... I miss the show "Lost" ;)

I love looking at these up close. Here's a question for you. Why did Norm (or the sketch drawer) add fish to a cup of water for a chicken soup Wacky? Does it make any sense other than it deals with water?
-

I never really thought of that but it is an excellent point.

I never really thought of that but it is an excellent point.
There are many bad gags and ones that have no focus. Funny looking characters on common household products with "some" titles have really good gags allowed wackys to thrive.
We should start a thread where we only discuss the gag, not the recognition of the product, not the great art, just purely the gag. I think we will find more not so great ones than we expect....
-

I think the addition of these characters is just a choice for humor, as was already pointed out. I was just looking at the Old School sticker for Bubble Yuk, and the cow is there, I think as some connection to chewing cud - and I think it works.
Glad you enjoy looking at the links to my full-res scans - I like to post what I call "archival level" scans of these old pieces of packaging - so that you really couldn't get a better look at it, even if you had the original box in your hand.

Here's one I thought you guys would dig. I've shared my 1970's Underwood Deviled Ham packaging before, which was a basis for an original Wacky Sticker - but I recently acquired a 1950's Underwood package, and it's pretty spectacular. So, today, I'll share my series of packages that I've picked up for this:

Here's the basis for the 1970's 12th Series Flare - a Flair pen, in blue. I recently acquired a number of variations of these, and this is very likely the exact version used as a model for the parody:

Seems like we had this about once ever other week when I was growing up. Treat (like Spam) one week and deviled ham the next. For some reason, I remember preferring it on toast rather than plain bread.

I really liked it (Treet) as a kid when appropriately slathered with Miracle Whip and fresh tomatoes.
I don't think I have had it for about 25 years now... which, coincidentally, happens to be
it's shelf half-life. When we were in Hawaii about 2 years ago, I was surprised to see several
of the breakfast meals at McDonalds came with Spam. The Spam was chopped into small cubes.
They say Hawaiians fell in love with Spam during the time preceding and during WW II when it
was abundant on the islands due to the number of military bases. I always thought it was
an overblown stereotype but you do see it a lot there.

Hi guys,
Just posted a number vintage holiday candy pieces to my Flickr pages, and I hope you guys can drop by and check them out. I'm excited to share them:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jasonliebigstuff/
I also just did a big Bit-O-Honey posting, with related pieces going all the way back to the 1920's. Since Bit-O-Honey is the basis for the 1970's 6th Series Bit-O-Money, I wanted to post about it here. So here is my 1970's Bit-O-Honey wrapper:
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5085/5269414954_1eccd8efa8.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jasonliebigstuff/5269414954/)

And though it's not the basis for a Wacky, one of my all-time favorite pieces in my collection is a Bit-O-Honey spinoff, Bit-O-Chocolate, also from the 1970's. Of note, as far as I know, this is the only image you'll find of one of these anywhere on the net. In fact, it's the only example of one of these I've ever seen, photo or otherwise:

Hope you guys dig 'em, and I do hope you can stop by my Flickr just to see some of the other interesting bits of candy history. There's a fun 1969 Topps Press release among 'em... oh heck, I might as well post that here - 'tis the Season, after all:

Very cool! I didn't know there was Gold Rush in 1982. What flavor is the one on the left - regular "bubble gum" flavor, or another fruit?

Jason, those Gold Rush bags take me back to my childhood - having a sack in my pocket to munch on while I rode my bike around the neighborhood.

The adjective-less bag on the far left was, I believe, simply the fruit flavor but not named, which was also the standard flavor. When they introduced the other flavors, they added the fruit flavor distinction.

Not willing to try a piece to be sure, hmmm?? :] I remember buying that gum frequently, but I don't remember if they had a regular 'bubble gum' flavor.

I think that we should convince Topps to bring that good old gum back :D

They were able to match that 70's original wacky gum with ANS. Smells great, chews good for 3 seconds, flavor sugar rush, then instant hardening into rock like substance while retaining zero flavor. Ahh yes, that great Wacky Gum - only real use was for staining the cards.

Ha ha, I remember riding my bike home from the store with a pocket loaded full of gum sticks, and about every 50 rotations of the peddles I would need another stick to keep the flavor rush going, and my jaw muscles would get sore!
-
Regarding the gum, I guess the folks at Topps haven’t heard of Wonka’s Everlasting Gobstopper concept?

I agree. It wasn't much of a flashback without the gum. I guess they were relying on those stupid border patterns to trigger the flashbacks.

LOL!
Finally someone offers up a sensible explanation for those crazy FB borders. That one pattern is of mushrooms supports your theory.

although not used in the original run of wackys, I saw this at the grocery store today.
I guess it's just the next round in Pepsi Co. use of retro packaging?

It's definately retro looking.
That reminds me, in NJ, we never did get the retro pepsi that was discussed on the forum here. The one that was made with real sugar like back in the day. I thought that release was a limited time but was supposed to be nation wide.
-

I think they stopped making it for quite a few years, but it was brought back not long ago as a "Late Night" flavor called Tacos at Midnight, although I'm not sure if it was the original flavor from the 70's.

Yes, this is retro packaging, and the way they're reintroducing the "classic" taco flavor for Doritos -So, the packaging is limited, but the flavor is set to become a standard again. The packaging is the style used in the early 80's. Original Taco, and variations of Taco flavors have been released over the years. Also, this week Hostess released retro Twinkies and Cupcakes, which you can probably find at Wal-Mart, and Shoprite stores have an exclusive retro Ho-Ho's.

and what's that yellow thing on the front of the package? it looks like a skillet or a measuring cup.
and don't tell me it's a sombrero, because it's clearly not. :P

So are these retro Twinkies made with the old recipe? Or is it just retro packaging?

The Twinkies have banana-flavored creme filling - which is, historically speaking, the only kind of creme filling that Twinkies had during the initial years of their existence, before WW2. So the flavor is retro, but I can't imagine that the recipe is.

Maybe those are the actual Twinkies from before WW2.

Well, according to Family Guy, Twinkes can servive anything. That means that maybye they are from before WW2 :o
-

I know we're joking - but in reality, Hostess products have surprisingly short shelf-lives. Twinkies, for instance, become dry and rock hard in a few years time. Like an old piece of cake, I guess.
Another tidbit is that the banana flavor has been brought back before - most recently as a tie-in to the recent King Kong remake. This one is far more fun, of course, because they've brought back the 1970's version of the mascot.

Me too! What's great about this is that it certainly sets the stage for more retro possibilities. Retro Chocodiles would be great, and would be a great excuse to do a limited national release of them. Right now they're regional.
The only thing I wouldn't expect to see is a retro Big Wheels package with Chief Big Wheel.

I loved the Taco flavored Doritos from the 70's. The new ones in the Late Night bag are definitely not the same. I will have to try and find some of the retro ones. I love that 15 sent bag. I used to buy those all the time!

I found a bag at Sams club. Strange that I have never seen these in Colorado before but you can still find Doritos Taco Chips in North Dakota. I started to think it was a regional thing.

Here's a new one I just acquired - it's the basis for the 1985 Wacky Package sticker Reaganets - it's a photo box for Raisinets:
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4120/5442405650_887f057dce_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jasonliebigstuff/5442405650/)

Though the Wacky is from the 1985, this particular photo box most likely dates to the later 1970's.
Before the photo box, they had a more simple illustrated box - this one is an early 1970's example:

That is great news! I loved those cough drops as a kid, my mom bought them all the time. Your Wacky captures the box perfectly - one of my favorites from the set.

Wow! Thanks SlamJim, I never thought someone would post the products that quickly! Seeing the products and comparing them to the Wackies, makes the Wackies all the better! :D

I like the way they were chewy without being gummie.

Hi guys,
Not sure if images for the original product basis for Monsterettes have ever surfaced. I recently acquired an old Nabisco Salesman binder, probably from around 1969-1970, containing a great wealth of package images. This page features Oysterettes, clearly the basis for Monsterettes:

dang. there's so much retro packaging around now that you could do a whole ANS set and everyone would think it was an Old School set

Was that a shot? It's hard to know because so many collectors can't let go of the original series and realize there are actually new series. Not a shot back directly to you but others have trouble being a kid again with the same parody stickers we collected as a kid. Every one wants to compare everything to the good old days. ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! We have to be very happy with new series coming out and hope it doesnt end soon. I love the new stuff. Sure it's not the old stuff but it's still fun!

I agree. There's been so much, so fast, everyone should take another look at the ANS stuff and dig in, there's a lot of good stuff there!

hmmm? that wasn't a shot at all and I'm not even sure how you could read it that way.
i wasn't comparing ANS to the Originals, I was just saying that with all this "modern" retro packaging, the ANS sets and Dave's Old School sets could start looking the same
should Topps avoid this stuff for ANS? or maybe they could start doing ANS Old School-style subsets consisting of only products that are using retro packaging - Chee-tos, Cheerios, Mountain Dew, Doritos, Capn Crunch, etc.
Make it a guessing game. 1973? or 2011?
-

Yes! I have the complete run of 1-16 and a ton of doubles. I also have a bunch of unopened packs. I don't have any art or boxes from OS. My OS stuff is pretty much complete so that is why it's fun to pay most of my attention to the new stuff.

Glad you're enjoying everything Brad, but this statement puzzles me. I loved comics when I was a kid, from 1971-1980 or so. I still love those comics today, and collect them. Does that mean I should collect new comics? I don't like the art or the overall style of new comics. I like Bronze Age comics and that's what I collect.
The notion that just because someone collected wackys as a kid that they should automatically want to collect new wackys puzzles me. I like original series wackys, and I will continue to focus on collecting them. I get a few guffaws from some of the new stuff, but for the most part, I feel similarly to the way I feel about comics.
Why exactly should we let go of the original series? Realizing there are new wackys doesn't equate to caring about them.
-

You're right... and it's pretty fantastic... if you're into that sort of thing. Which, ahem, I am.
Not sure if you guys saw it, but Target even had retro Downy, Bounce, and one other product in that vein. They didn't match the old package size or plastic bottle shape, but they used all of the 70's graphics on current package sizes.
As for old vs. new? Is there really any room for criticism?
You can weigh the merits of artwork and how folks buy them, how they're distributed - and there's certainly some interesting discussion there, as there is with comparing 45's to iTunes. Nothing wrong with choosing one over the other, or both, or neither, is there? To each their own.
However, when you start claiming one is intrinsically better, more important, or more valuable than the other - you've simply bought into an myth that only stands if people believe it. The value of collectibles is completely about what value we ascribe to them - the value comes from us - not the things. By themselves, they're just old ephemera. Most of which is trash. And lets face it, that's still how most people feel about the things we collect. Which, I think, is perfectly fine. :great:

No, sorry, sometimes posts are read the wrong way. What I meant is some collectors don't really care for the new stuff or they are casual collectors of the new stuff but still compare all the new stuff to the old. You really can't compare the new stuff to the old. Everyone has their opinion.
I embrace all the new stuff and I like how Dave has brought us back to the good old days with the OLDS series.
There is no nostalgia for me with the new series like the OS. I just love to collect Wacky's. I don't like all of newer series but some are really fantastic. I also love how the artists have brought the classic characters back through the sketch cards. Through this we can be kids again.

I agree with the way you feel too. I am having a blast collecting the new series. Although I still love the vintage Wackys, they have taken a back-seat for me to the new series the past several years. I still am chipping away at upgrading my vintage collection and I keep my eye out for the rare ones I still need, but that's about it.
The new series are exciting because it's not as redundant as the originals. Every series is new and fresh, and most of them feature very good art and gags, only with better print quality. To me the sketch cards only add to that excitement. My only complaint fro the new series is what it's doing to my bank account, but hopefully the odds improve for ANS8 and they do NOT do another Flashback series!

Very cool! I don't really recall the packaging as a kid, but are they the candies that look like big multi-color smarties with a tire track around the edge? I vaguely remember a candy like the one pictured on the package.

O man... if I were the Rotsa Root artist, I sure would have been tempted to put Japanese setting suns behind the "Japanese Candy Money" text after seeing the original candy wrapper. Umm, I can say that because I work for Sony... would ya believe.

After years of searching, I've finally turned up a Milk Duds box that is the style parodied in 1974's Series 12 Milk Muds.
I've documented a bit more about it on my CollectingCandy.com site, and if you're curious, you can check it out here:

I should note that, I've found a number of 1970's Milk Duds boxes over the years, but have never found one of these styles. I'm not sure why this box style has eluded me for so long, only that it has.

Thanks, Dave. I do try to convey how exciting this stuff is for me, and I know I've got a leg up when a collector reads that. It's great feedback to get, and I do appreciate it.

Agree with Dave. Really nicely done and fun to explore! :great:

I also really like your site Jason. Almost every time I read one of your articles it jogs my memory back to something I had forgotten about. Keep up the fine work.

I looked into beer can collecting years ago and like Wackys I was surprised at how big of a hobby it is. It looked like a fun item to collect, as long as you have the display space.
-
yea... it's huge... I bought these to educate myself on them and resell... unfortunately the education has already taught me that the ones from the 1970s aren't worth all that much :( Guess I will have to keep them and add it to the list of things I collect.... You may be seeing my on an episode of Hoarders before long...

That's good and bad though, because if you are a newbie you can collect the 70's cans fairly cheaply. If I remember correctly you have to back into the 50's and 60's to have the value go way up, and like Wackys condition is everything with the old ones.

Here's what I've got for Original Product Images for Old School Series 3 - I know one or two of these are pretty common, and a few others are very difficult to find. I'm happy to state that Dave used a few pieces from my collection for direct inspiration:

Jason, just curious....do you own any Space Dust packaging? That's the one I remember more than Pop Rocks for some reason.

I do...I have all three of the different flavor packs, as well as all six of the Cosmic Candy flavor packs (what Space Dust was renamed to), as well as a cool promo poster they put out for Cosmic Candy. I'm planning on doing a piece covering all of them soon, as the inventor was also a pretty interesting guy.
For now...here's the Cosmic Candy promo poster:

Same here. Grew up on the West Coast with tons of Pop Rocks everywhere but never heard of Cosmic Candy or Space Dust

I do not recall Cosmic Candy or Space Dust either, unless they put it in the joint, then I'd still probably not remember. Anyway, on the east coast here in NJ it was Pop Rocks too.

Both Cosmic Candy and Pop Rocks were popular here in the midwest (Indiana and Ohio areas) but I don't recollect seeing Space Dust. In my mind there was a good sized gap in time between Cosmic Candy and Pop Rocks though. It didn't seem like they were contemporaries. As for me, I preferred Zots for a candy that would explode in my mouth.

I found a bag at Sams club. Strange that I have never seen these in Colorado before but you can still find Doritos Taco Chips in North Dakota. I started to think it was a regional thing.
I found the retro packaging taco flavored Doritos at Walmart tonight.

The basis for Series 9's Heartburn cereal - here's Heartland cereal.
Note: This box is from 1976, and sports a "New Improved Taste" graphic burst on the package that the Wacky doesn't have. But other than that - this is the box:

Pretty cool. I remember those raisins being hard as rocks though. Not soft and sugar coated like raisin bran. Otherwise, loved that stuff and still get it once in a blue moon.

Thanks for posting. My recollection of this cereal is that it was quite the fad for a while. My family bought a bunch (we tended to stock up), which may have contributed to my perception that it was selling like hotcakes. Though I don't recall eating it too often, its image is definitely seared into my brain.

Thanks Jason, I always enjoy seeing the original product packaging to compare with the Wacky. It often helps give a better appreciation for some of the little gags or puns the artist/designed might have put on the Wacky.

Something new for the Original Wacky Product thread... this one is from the final original Wacky Packages series 16, and is an original Wacky product I've been hunting for, for years:

BTW it is one of my faves from 16. I just love it and I don't know why?

My scanner isn't dirty. Those specks are on the border. I assume they are black ink from the printing process.

Since there are crickets now in Wackyland, lets revive this thread and share hard-to-find actual product photos used for vintage WP spoofs.
Here's a few rare product photos spoofed in the 1967 die-cuts and series 1 sets:

Awesome! Don't see perfect matches of early series products like these too often - the Spray Net is fantastic, and a really sharp image!

Thanks for the pics - Would be really cool to see each card with its 1967 product next to one another

Rusty's website lostwackys.com is probably by far the best single source for real product images alongside OS 1-16 titles. Not every image is a perfect match with respect to the exact packaging graphics at the time the parody was done, but many of them are, or at least very close matches. If you click on "old wacky packages" you will then see alphabetical listings of the parody title under each series number. Click on any title and you will see the parody & real product image side-by-side. Very fun viewing.

Jason - not sure if you're aware, but the Regal Crown brand has been revived and these candies are back in production. Over the summer I visited a retro-candy shop called Bobb Howard, which is actually operated in conjunction with an automotive service station in western Nassau County, and they had the new rolls. Label artwork is very close to the original. Also Reed's roll candies are back. Both Bobb Howard and Economy Candy on the Lower East Side has both brands. Reed's is available in a couple flavors, butterscotch and I think root beer are the ones I remember seeing.
-
Would be awesome to incorporate in the Master Spreadsheet
-
Embedded jpg's would be best and I don't think Google Sheets supports that. I could use links but they're transient. Hm, not sure I want to tackle that!

I did not know that. I had thought they were still in development hell, so to speak. Thanks for the tip. Can't wait to try them!

Hey gang, revived my Wacky Wednesdays column for today, as I finally tracked down an early 70's Smith Brothers cough drops box (the basis of Smith Sisters). Something I've been hunting for, for the better part of a decade. You can see my post about it here:

Amazing! As collectors, I think we sometimes take it for granted that the original packaging will always be around (at least for a while). But when you have to search 10 years for just one box, it really puts things in perspective! The fact that it's 10x easier to find the original Wacky Packages sticker than the original packaging speaks volumes. A big thanks for sharing these with us!
-

Thanks! That's sort of related to an idea I've had for a while that I don't currently have the time to mount...
and that would be producing a little bootleg card set called "Actual Packages", which would be maybe a 20-30 card set of some of the original Wacky products I've tracked down over the years. With the front being essentially what you see there with the Smith Brothers, and the back would describe what original Wacky it inspired and perhaps tell a bit about the history of the actual product itself, its place in advertising/consumer culture history, etc. Just sort of a goof, but something that might be fun for collectors to put in some 9-card pages or maybe do a few 9-card pages of side-by-sides with their matching Wacky sticker. A bit of a left-field complement to some original series stickers, especially when viewed together.
After producing the promo card for my Kickstarter in October, I realized that you can do a limited amount of cards with a good quality without breaking the bank. Could be fun. It would be for me! Something I might get to in the Fall if I can make the time.

As I recall Wacky lore, the original idea of what became Wacky Packages was stickers of actual products. Then Len Brown, or somebody, suggested making parodies of the products instead. If your idea of "Actual Packages" came to fruition, it would be a sort of full-circle turn for Wackys.
I do like the idea you've proposed. I think the most appealing products would be ones we 40 and 50 somethings enjoyed as kids. For example, while I do remember Smith Brothers cough drops, it would be even cooler to have the original box of Capt. Crunch as an "Actual Package". Nothing wrong with less well-remember products, of course, but it is fun to see those items we fondly remember from childhood.

Or alternatively, instead of having to flip the card to see the Wacky parody, produce a panoramic size (like a wacky Ad size) card with the original product on the left and the Wacky parody on the right, so you see them side by side and get a full appreciation of the similarities and (of course) the differences.

Brilliant!!! I'm McLovin' it!

One would have to get permission from the actual manufacturers of the product to do a series featuring real products. Nevertheless, such a thing might sell on a smaller scale to collectors. Series #1 would just have the 30 or so real products parodied in Wacky Packages series 1, and the product would be called SERIOUS PACKAGES. Makes more sense to me than MLB Wackys.

Imagine the sound a balloon makes when you let the air out....phhhhhhhhttttt....phhhhtttt....phhttt...

One consideration, of course, is that there are several actual products for which there are multiple Wackys - like Kelloggs Frosted Flakes.

Thanks for all the input and ideas (and possible history) guys.
If I were to do it, it would be in a totally bootleg/underground/illegal unlicensed fashion. I'd come up with 20 or 30 trading cards-sized cards and I'd do a run of 20 or 30 sets, that I'd invite forum members to buy at cost. It would be merely a lark, but one that I'd endeavor to make look professional.
And I'd be pulling exclusively from the pool of items where I have personally uncovered the original Wacky product, a hobby quest I've had a lot of fun with. I've personally tracked down quite a few products where images didn't exist online previously or exist in any decent quality before. So I'd make my editorial choices from that pool.
I really like a lot of the ones I've found - things like an early 70's Slim Jim box - of which there were no photos or scans of one before I found mine. Love that one. To be clear, I would not pull from pre-existing images online - that wouldn't interest me, and it wouldn't be any fun (for me, anyway).
I do not have a 1960's Cap'n Crunch cereal box, for instance, but I also did not find or uncover that original Wacky product - images of those boxes were not impossible to find when I started doing this. Though the boxes themselves are pretty tough to acquire from collectors. I'd say you're looking at a minimum of $1,000 for one of those, in middling condition.
Obviously, there's a good deal of candy that I've exclusively tracked down that matches up with 70's Wackys, so I'd certainly put a good amount of that in.
Also, I'd be doing this for the original 1-16 series. Not the 80's or contemporary stuff, nor Old School (though I provided Dave with a good deal of reference packaging pieces for Old School products - so that would be pretty easy :-) )
Finally, I'd avoid reproducing the Wacky Packages sticker art on these in any marked way. Perhaps I'd include a small B&W inset of the original sticker on the back - but even that is something I'd try to steer clear of. I'd choose to avoid ruffling Topps' feathers - I'm far less concerned about Slim Jim coming after me for producing 30 cards with their 40-year-old box art on them. These would be something that would truly be a complement to existing stickers. An oddball little thing.
But again, "Actual Packages" is a pet project and idea that I may never do, but I brought it up here, so I welcome the discussion. And I appreciate the input.
P.S. I love Jay's idea about doing a 1-for-1 series of "Serious Packages" but I can guarantee you that some of these original Wacky products will never be found. Even the manufacturers that are still around, many of them don't have their old product reference in any quality reproducible format. Some do, but I'd say most do not. That doesn't even cover the ones who are long gone. So, even if someone were so ambitious as to mount that, the barriers to doing it or doing it right would be huge. I know this, because it took me nearly ten years to track down a Smith Brothers cough drops box. And in that same decade I've only ever found a single example of early 70's Slim Jim box, for instance.
-

Now that might be the best idea for a new Wacky set that I have ever heard!

Jason, cool idea and based on the quality of your 'Zombie Mouth' promo card, it will look awesome! I think Neil's thought that it would be a fun Wacky Packages 50th anniversary item is right on. Shoot for Jan 2017 and consider doing 100 sets. That seems to be a nice number to cover all the forum's hardcore collectors.

I can sometimes find original packaging in old magazine ads. Not always the best source, but useful nonetheless.

I can sometimes find original packaging in old magazine ads. Not always the best source, but useful nonetheless.
Yeah, some of it is out there in magazines and it certainly is useful for what it is - but not for me and not for this. That's not the material that excites me, nor is it material I'd use for reproduction on something like this.
My thing is tracking down and finding the original product packaging. That's what's fun for me and what's interesting. And it is the only source material that would prompt me to do something like an "Actual Packages" set. Anything less would be a debilitating compromise I would be unwilling to make.
For an example, though there were no photos of Wacky era Slim Jim boxes online when I started, there were (and are) small illustrations of the boxes included in the old Slim Jim comic book ads. And those ads are wonderful (a lot of the them feature monsters like the Wolfman and so on), but they're illustrated (by the always-amazing Jack Davis if I recall), and the illustrations of the boxes are small and poorly printed. I wouldn't work with that for this, because it would look awful.
But I would work with an original box, which I tracked down just over six years ago.. and it's the only example of one of these I've ever seen or even known to exist:

It is the unique and challenging nature of the original packaging that makes something like this possible, fun and worth doing from my perspective. I think Rusty's old Wacky site (or someone else's) typically used old magazine ad pics to reference original packages, and they have long been a terrific resource to have something - some kind of image for many original Wackys. So I don't mean to disparage that. But that kind of stuff isn't going to have any bearing on this, if it ever happens.
-
I know what you're saying. It's kind of like comparing a photocopy to an original painting. I only meant that the ads can be useful for reference. Rock on!

I too understand the difference between finding the original packaging as opposed to an image. But, I am enjoying seeing the old packaging and products on the BUZZR channel I started getting recently. Lots of cool stuff on "Let's Make a Deal!"

That's cool. I recall some point last year where I saw an old 1970's episode of The Price is Right - and that's pretty cool overall, but I found myself obsessing over the grocery products shown. I'm that kind of nerd.

Well, I can't say I have been obsessing over the grocery products, but I do find myself checking out the packaging, and pricing. They very often have Rice-a-Phoni and Raw Goo Sauce.

Don't have fried noodles, but I got this (well, they ARE fried - maybe this IS what you meant):

I commit to nothing! :-)
But I do like the timing.
I think you have nailed it with the name "actual packages" even though some other ideas have been offered. Also think staying with high quality photos is the way to go so if they can only be obtained with pictures of the actual product, then so be it. Quite surprised it has taken 10 years to find some of these boxes, I had always thought this stuff was squirrled away somewhere. I bet each company has the images in their archives. Reaching the person(curator) who has them and convincing them to send you images would prove difficult. I suspect you only want to use products in your collection and not even high quality images from company archives anyway, correct?

Yeah, I like "Actual Packages" the most, too. :-)
I've dealt with many companies over the years, and in only a few rare cases do companies have archives of their product packaging. General Mills is one of the exceptions - they've kept amazing records and have files of most of their cereal boxes and other products. Their archive is truly a museum. But on the other hand....lets see...
Nestle: They've had to reference my site a number of times to answer consumer questions about their own products. They have virtually nothing in regard to their past product information, let alone actual packaging .
Wrigley: I interviewed and worked with the longtime head of marketing and product managers/graphic designers when I researched my history of Big League Chew. The only thing in Wrigley's files were a few trade flyers and it took a while for those to be found. Months into the process, a former graphic designer found two sets of photos on an old hard drive (ten images in total) of old packaging from the late 80's and early 90's. Even the inventors/creators of the brand had nothing - no one involved saved anything. Currently, my personal Big League Chew packaging archive serves as the sole reference material for current PR/media instances where the old packaging is needed.
Lifesavers: When they celebrated their 100th Anniversary and created a special celebration box for it, they had to use my Gummi Savers wrapper scan to represent the launch of that product.
Then there are the acquisition losses. So many companies now are a conglomeration of other companies. For instance: Milk Duds for 80 years were produced by the Holloway company. That company merged with Clark and was eventually sold to Leaf and then Hershey. I've spoken to the Hershey Archives many times, and with regard to the Milk Duds brand, they have NOTHING from before 1986. For anything before that, they have to come to me. The sad reality is that as companies merge or are bought out or file chapter 11 or 13, if archives happen to have been kept up to that point, they are the first thing to get tossed in the trash.
One of the saddest phone conversations I had was with the executive who developed the Bubble Yum brand in the early 1970's. We spoke at length about how it all came to be. When I asked if he still had any of those old materials/samples he responded that he "carted them with him for 35 years, but finally threw them out just two years ago". My heart sank to the floor because that unique bit of history had disappeared into a landfill and I had only missed it by two years.
So the reality is that this material is not, in fact, "squirreled away" as lovely as that idea is. In most cases, it is in serious danger of being lost to history. And more and more is lost all the time.
And as much material as I've found and uncovered over the years, there is so much that has yet to be found, and that may never be.
That's why it's been fun for me to do this, and when I get to do things like publish the "only known images of Willy Wonka's Nerds Hot and Cool flavor box" -- that's pretty fun. That product is from 1989, and until I published those images, the only references to the product online at all were hazy recollections referring to them as "Hot and Cold Nerds". 1989 wasn't that long ago. But I currently have the only known box for that.
Speaking of nerds... I think I have just definitively proved how much of one I am.
-
Jason - awesome find on the Smith Bros box. I've done occasional eBay searches for years myself, and the Perfect match has never turned up. Was beginning to wonder if it really ever existed.
I guess certain packaging graphics changed very slowly or infrequently, Whitman's Candy Sampler being a good example that comes to mind, while others such as Smith Bros maybe for only a few months to a year, before changing again. Part of it also, I'm sure, is the practicality of saving stuff. I'm sure the Whitman boxes were seen by many as a convenient storage container, whereas why would one keep a cough drop box. Without the foresight of Wacky lore, they all get lost to the landfills.

wow, fantastic write up! Very sad so little is squirrled away but I guess in this age of people being worried about being hoarders, purging is the way to go. When temped at Nabisco in the 1980s, I know they at least had pictures of their old products, don't know if they kept actual packaging.

And we thank you for it! :D Always fun to read your accounts and, sad as it is to know some of this stuff is being lost to time, it's nice to know some of us (you in particular) are playing no small part in preserving it.

One of the worst stories I ever heard was that of Ovaltine. Ovaltine had kept voluminous records; packaging samples, promotional pieces, even going so far as to have the detailed ledgers on radio show contest entries dating back to the 1930's (they had a long relationship with the Annie Oakley show). Along the way, they became a subsidiary of Nestle.
Somewhere around 2005-2009, Nestle had still retained the records rooms of Ovaltine. And in what I can only imagine was a numbers person wondering why there was office space sitting "unused" they opted to dump the entire contents of those two rooms. Fortunately, they didn't put it directly into a dumpster. The rooms were emptied onto a few pallets and employees were told to "take what you want - in a week it goes to the dump".
I know of this story because one employee took as much as he could fit in his car and would later sell most all of that to a dealer I know. But that's a prime example of what we're talking about.
Of course, even Topps has a history of discarding (or at least not properly taking care of) their heritage. As most here know, when selling off their original Wacky Packages paintings through the Topps Vault auctions, they weren't keeping high-resolution scans or photos of the pieces. So that when it came time to source original artwork for the Abrams books, they had to contact the winners of those auctions to get scans where they could. It's crazy.
And I've no doubt that Nabisco had "photos of their old products", though I wonder if they had every product photographed. Most companies have some historical photos, but that's nothing so complete as I would think you'd want.
But to end on an uplifting note - a friend of mine got to tour General Mills' archives just this last summer, and they have file copies of every cereal box they've produced going back to the 1960's at least (not sure how complete the archives are before that).
So they don't just have a few examples of 1970's Frankenberry boxes for instance; they have an example of every variation - every promotion done - every known Frankenberry box. I guess we'd call what they have a "master set". They even have examples of test marketed or concept boxes that were made up but not produced or sold -- even those strange, mythical treasures. It is everything you'd hope for or want from a company archive, and the few photos I had the pleasure to see were dazzling.
My favorite: A cereal based on the "JJ" character from Good Times called Dine-o-mite - in chocolate and strawberry. Box featured a cartoon version of JJ. It's something none of us in the cereal hobby had ever heard even a whiff of. And in the hands of some other company, that tiny bit of history might have been lost, and long forgotten by the few people who ever knew about it.

Yep, I know it well, that's from Rusty's site or the other original product one.
I've been a little skeptical of that one in the past as it looks a little Photoshopped and only includes the partial section of the label, but I assume it's accurate to a real specimen.
I will say that the version of Green Giant mascot illustration featured on that Rusty version I don't think existed at the time of the Die-Cuts. Again, I'm not 100% on that, but I think they introduced that version of the mascot in 1969. I think in 1966-67, he was the version found on my label.

Cool! Well, that second label there seems to be similar to the Rusty original product image and it's largely complete.
The 1960 scarf-wearing Green Giant is a bit of a puzzle, because I know that the 1955 version was used well into the 1960's. But I think back then they allowed some branding to carry on long after updates in different areas.
I have a printer sample from 1962 of a Green Giant frozen offering, so that 1960 date must be accurate - but I still think that they may have not updated the canned goods version of the mascot until many years later.

That's an interesting question! I never speculate and had to look it up on Al Gore's inter-web
(And we've lost our Spoiler function . . .)
In 1961, the Green Giant Company introduced frozen vegetables and the
Jolly Green Giant got a red scarf to keep him warm from the freezing winds,
and his arms were crossed to help with any shivering.

Interesting!! I did not know that. I still think it's possible that there is a slightly tweaked version of the original product where "Cup Cakes" was not written as two words and may have been in a red color. Though perhaps it was an artistically-motivated tweak from the original by Norm? For now I think we can only speculate. But I am thrilled to have finally found an era-appropriate Hostess cupcake label at all. Just got it this week and it was really cool, because I've always wanted one for the Wacky connection, but wasn't sure I'd ever find one.

Rooms adjacent to the restaurant area are a museum, but focuses on some street scenes of that era with old wagons, etc. Unfortunately, they don't currently display much old packaging.

Is that Voldemort's head on the back of that woman's silhouette like in the first Harry potter movie?
Hah hah hah... I've seen a second face on that one a few times when looking at it.

That sounds pretty interesting. Wonder how much old packaging they have?

What is that from?
I found this image online many years back, when I was just beginning my Wacky quest. I was able to determine the site where I got it and, incredibly, it is still active (GLG: Gotta Love Google). Looks like this Charles Barnard only put these images up on the web here (http://www.barnardart.com/wackys/wackys.htm). This is all I know.

Thanks for that link! Some of those are pretty good. Think I like the Krusty Kreme the best.

After digging around for a bit, I found a link to them off John Mann's page, along with some others

Fun to see some of those old ones by David Gross and George Wright. :-) Never seen them before.

Agreed! Also great to see all those great early gags by Paul Harris!

Not a whole lot of label variations on display, but, perhaps they didn't change their packaging much through the years. We just had lunch there last Friday, so here are a few pictures of what they do have on display. Most items are in glass display cases and it was a sunny day so hard to avoid reflections...

The museum occupies about 4 large rooms and includes a city street mock-up, an old grocery store display, and an old bank vault and teller window, amongst other things. The restaurant is nestled withing the museum rooms. They also have a kitchens area where they offer cooking lessons in the evenings. They also use the kitchens to produce cooking segments for one of the local television station's news programs. Terre Haute was also the place that the iconic "hourglass" shaped Coca Cola bottled was first manufactured but, unfortunately, there is nothing to commemorate that but a point of interest sign where the factory once stood.

Digging up this old thread, as I wasn't sure where I should post this, but Target currently has throwback Crest Toothpaste on sale. Picked one up yesterday. Kinda fun. The actual tube even sports the graphics (though not the old-school topper).
Here's a pic:

I see they have throwback regular Crest. Did you see if they had throwback mint Crest, too, since those were the two original flavors?

They did not. But, I don't think that's an accurate statement. I believe "Mint Crest" came many years into the Crest brand's lifespan. I believe Mint was introduced in the later 1960's, at least a decade after the brand had launched.

Awesome Jason, thanks for the tip. I’ll buy a bunch of these if my Target has them. I use the basic Crest anyway, and Target has some of the lowest regular prices for toothpaste, so it’s win-win. Love the simplicity of the design, it’s so 60’s/70’s.

Hey Jason. Can you recommend any decent vintage packaging coffee table books? I can't believe there isn't that many out there on the subject.

There's not really such a thing, broadly speaking. There's vintage ad books, certainly, like the Taschen books. But I'd say the closest thing to a "vintage packaging book" might be Krazy Kids Food by my old buddy Dan Goodsell and Steve Roden.
It's a category of pop culture and ephemera that, even now, remains largely unexplored and undocumented, though I've put a lot of effort into it over the past 15 years.
And though they were contemporary at the time of their publication, there are "Packaging Design" books, covering award winning and breakthrough packaging innovations from the years they were published. I have a couple of those from the 1970's/1980's era.

So was I! I remember Mint Crest and used it - and I was born in 1963. I didn't even know that it was the late 1960s when it came out; I just knew it was there and I liked it.
In fact, remember the toothpaste the dentist used to clean your teeth when you had a dental appointment? I kind of remember there being mint and cinnamon flavors. Later, they added bubble gum.

I just remember those weird tablets that they gave us that stuck to and reddened up the plaque on our teeth.

Called "plaque disclosing tablets", they are still being used.
